I'm hope everyone enjoys how spam-free TFA is kept. It takes a bit of
work in the background deleting spam, banning the authors and
sometimes sending abuse reports to their ISP (especially if it came
from within one of Google's own gmail accounts).

With the increasing traffic and the holidays coming (higher spam
volume), we decided to change the group settings to send the first
message(s) of someone who just joined, to the moderation queue. There
it will be checked by a moderator and released if there's nothing
nefarious about it. This should not affect current members, but may
cause a delay for anyone who just joined, so we thought to mention it
to all.

cheers

Thanks for your work, makes a big difference in how I see it compared
to some groups.

Sounds great to me.

Also, I would like to give a big THANK YOU to everyone behind the
scenes that makes this group what it is.
You all do an excellent job. = )

Just a quick update. The new member moderation has been catching two
or three spam messages a day so it's working well. Hopefully when the
spammers figure out that their messages are not going through to the
group they will give up.

New members, please don't hesitate to post. We send on-topic posts to
the group as soon as we see them, and we remove the moderation as soon
as it's clear that you are here to talk about fishkeeping. Again, I
apologize for the delay on your first post(s).

I've managed big forums, (Listservs), in the past and had to moderate each email before releasing it for posting. And new emails arrived around the clock. I know first hand how much time and dedication this process entails. I tip my hat to the moderators of TFA for going this extra mile so that we may all enjoy a spam free environment. We have a web based forum with the luxury of a well moderated Listserv.

I'd like to add a related note here that has to do with web sites and links. When spambots explore web sites they are looking for email addresses to which they can send their voluminous spam messages. The bots pick up on every email link they can find, and they follow web links to other pages that are referred from the site. Moving to the linked site, they find a whole new batch of emails to grab and so on and so on. It's happened to me a couple of times, when Mortimer's web site adds my web site as a link, the spam bot haunting his site jumps to my site and I begin getting bombed with spam. I always thought that this was just another down side of owning a web site and there's nothing to prevent it, but I've found a line of code that essentially provides spambots with fake emails that can send the spambot into an endless circle of continuously changing fake email addresses. I'm a lazy WYSIWYG web site builder, but I found it super easy to drop this code into each page of my site. If you have a web site that refers visitors to other sites, I encourage you to take a look at this free service - I added it a couple of months ago to my site and the spam has dropped to almost zero. I feel better knowing that when I refer a visitor to another site, I'm not also sending a spambot to that site. It's free, it's spam free, and it works. Thank you so much for keeping this place a great resource and laying
the ban-hammer on the idiot spam-jockeys...much props.

Effective immediately, all members can now upload files and pictures
to the group's Files & Pages.

This will unfortunately result in spam and other undesirable material
appearing from time to time so all our moderators will be making an
extra effort to visit these pages more frequently, however if you come
across anything which doesn't belong, please notify us, either by an
'Email to Owners' as listed in the 'About this Group' or make mention
of it in your next post.

If the amount of spam becomes too much to handle as it was around xmas
time, then we'll reopen the discussion on it.

Our first-post(s) moderation policy has been very effective blocking
all sorts of spam, and appears to not have had any negative impact on
new posters, so this will remain unchanged until future notice. We
have enough moderators and time zones covered that the moderation
response time is typically under an hour, and sometimes in just a few
minutes.

When I joined this group I had never made a post before in my life, so
consequently I did not appreciate how much work it takes to keep a
site like this spam free and troller free. I realize I sound ignorant
but it's been a wonderful experience learning about this whole "group"
thing. But the most amazing part is, now that I have researched other
"groups" on the internet, is how clean this site is kept. Y'all must
work really hard at keeping it that way, so thank you, especially to
the moderators.
