What do I need in order to de-worm a discus fish?  I read a book on my kindle that told me that I need to be prepared to do this if they begin to produce clear or cloudy excrement-- something the author claims is a known discus pitfall.  I've never heard of this "de-worming" before.  The closest thing I can relate to it is my limited knowledge of treating for parasites.

I'm trying to learn all I can about discus before I go purchase the animals.  My new RO unit is also on the way.

If you are getting your discus from a reputable breeder they should
not have worms. Hexamita and other flagellates are a more common
problem, and they are treated with metronidazole.

For wild-caught fish or discus where you have a reasonable suspicion
that they do have worms, you want to feed a fenbendazole deworming
flake. The only trick is getting discus to eat it.

Both metronidazole and febendazole flakes are available at Angels
Plus. http://www.angelsplus.com/MedsParasite.htm

If they refuse the food, you would buy some praziquantel or levamisole
for worms, or metronidazole for flagellates/protozoans and treat with
it in the water. It's better to get meds into the intestinal tract
where the infection is, but meds added to the water can sometimes
work.

Flubendazole works through the skin and gills without being eaten.
Metronidazole must be ingested to work. The dosage rate of
Flubendazole is adjusted with the concentration in the water not by
guessing what the fish ate of the medicated food.

The flubendazole link is broken, but the link for levimasole (which has been highly recommended to me by a friend after inquiring based on your post) shows good documentation of internal parasitic disease but no purchase information. ( http://www.inkmkr.com/Fish/CamallanusTreatment/ )

Can you provide a working link? I can't find anywhere else on the net that sells levimasole for the aquarium... only instructions on how to use it.

Thanks!

I did find this (at top instead of sidebar) http://www.inkmkr.com/Fish/ItemsForSale.html

Not sure how that works, but I'll look into it later.

Tham you so much for the help!

I found this...
http://www.loaches.com/disease-treatment/levamisole-hydrochloride-1

Was very helpful. Don't know if my diseased fish in the hospital tank
will make it until the time the levamisole makes it to my house.

Charles, you are mentioned here in a forum discussion about levimasole:
http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=235859&st=20

Apparently you've been doing this for a while ;)

They mention certain documentation of yours that, when followed,
resulted in a successful de-infestation of parasites for more than one
person there. How fascinating. How might one acquire this documentation?

Is it the same information you make available from your fish website
already?

More information about Flubendazole is found down the page, there are
2 PDF links about the medication.
http://www.inkmkr.com/Fish/FlubendazoleArticle.pdf and
http://www.inkmkr.com/Fish/FlubendazoleTreatment.pdf

Information about prices, etc. are available in there as well.
