I ordered a ADA clone drop-checker from ebay, and I was thinking of
making some CO2 indicator solution.
I think that all you need is distilled water, baking soda and a few
drops of bromthymol blue (the stuff in your standard pH kit). Has
anyone here done that, any tips?

OK, slow down, not all at once... :-) I found this thread on the
subject, initiated by no less than Tom Barr, on Aquarium Advice:

I've got the JBL one, which works very well. It's not a thing of
beauty like the ADA glass tube, though it is cheaper.

Tom Barr's advice is all good (natch).

When (if) you test your concentrate solution for kH, I'd test a
diluted sample, say where you think kH should be around 20, otherwise
you'll use a whole bottle of reagent.

Keep some concentrate in a sealed container (acid proof). I've read
elsewhere that the pH reagent weakens over time and you will need to
renew the solution every few months.

You can use several drops of pH reagent to strengthen the colour.
I've found about 4 is good, 2 is a little weak when viewed through the
glass and with the water colour as background, more than 4 makes it
too intense and hard to see subtle changes.

It is a great tool to have for CO2 injection and has the side benefit
of giving you a rough pH indication all the time.

And "natch" means what?
