HELP! my Eheim 2224 canister started to leak like a sieve, and I'm
looking for replacement parts...

when I looked at things very carefully, it appears that I have somehow
misaligned the two media basket's tube towers when I put it back
together last time I cleaned the filter (~6mo ago). And that seems to
have resulted in undue pressure on the lower media basket tube which
caused the tube to lean, permanently warping the media basket bottom,
so that the baskets no longer align. It's hard to describe, but
imagine the lower tube leaning away from vertical, and taking the
bottom part with it, causing the overall basket shape to warp...

since the baskets do not align, the top motor unit doesn't fit
correctly anymore, and thus doesn't seal.

So, at the least, I need to replace the media basket. but no where I
look, I can't find anyone selling it.

am I screwed, and have to buy a brand new filter??? waaaa!!! anyone
on TFA group an Eheim dealer (or know of one who can help me with this
quickly?)

currently I managed to man-handle the baskets to align and sort of
managed to get the top motor unit to seat almost correctly (enough
that when I turn off the motor, it doesn't start pouring water out of
the seam, and the filter is sitting inside a bucket, just in case...
but if it goes, all 37gal water will eventually pour out, so... only
a momentary help if it really fails). but the internal mechanical
stress can't be good the way it is. so I'm about to take it off-line,
takei t apart and keep it apart and resurrect my HOT Magnum
temporarily to run the tank (it has two UGF powerheads, but I doubt
that's really doing much other than circulating water in the tank).

so, in addition to parts need, can anyone tell me how I could *try* to
save the biomedia from going toxic, etc? or should I just throw it
all out and start all over, since from the looks of it, it's going to
take days before I can run this thing again (with a comfort that it's
ok, and I haven't further damaged anything else..)

waaaa!!!

help!

Move the media into any suitable filter to keep it wet and
oxygenated. I keep HOB Aquaclears as backup filters. Pour the media
into a filter bag and put it into the HOB. With no backup filter, you
can still drop the media bag into the tank. I keep my sponge filters
alive this way. Good luck. Sounds like a special order part.

Hi netmax

...to the rescue again! thanks. I have rummaged through my spare
parts box, and grabbged few filter bags to dump the biomedia into the
tank... I'll try to cram in as much as I can into HOT Magnum, but the
media basket on that thing is pretty small, so... my "backup"
aquaclear is currently used on my tiny little 10G... may be it's time
to get the 10G the appropriate sized aquaclear.. nah.. too much work.

where does one special order Eheim parts? anyone know of online place?

Just crammed as much biofilter in the media basket as it would fit and
fired up the HOT Magnum. Oh my! I have forgotten how LOUD the thing
is compared to the Eheim canister!!!

I guess it will be an incentive to not sit on my butt and find the
replacement part ASAP... or if I can't find a replacement part, buy a
new one :-(

now to rescuing the remaining biofilters in the filter bag, and then
clean the Eheim for safe storage... I guess it'll be a good time to
clean out all the tubes while I'm at it...

I wouldn't worry about getting it all. Cramming might even restrict
the water movement. Saving half would be fine. The bacteria doubles
in population every 24 hours, so in another day back in the Eheim, you
would be back up to speed. Not all store chains can order replacement
parts from Eheim. Bigs Als can do it. Buying online might be
faster. Get ready for sticker shock though.

managed to cram the media into my nylon stockings :-) it ended up
being more like a long snake, but it actually fit better than having a
large ball..

as for sticker shock, I hear ya.. depending on the price, it might be
cheaper to buy a brand new one :-( I'll be calling around..

Ugh. called around.. getting nowhere (some say, "sorry, no parts",
some say "2224 has been discontinued!".. huh?). finally found the
Eheim parts website... but their order page is non-encrypted/non-
secure!!! argh! called their tech support and they're like "oh, just
enter all zeros, and then we'll call you to get the number". I can't
believe that in this day and age, there's a company that still sells
stuff on-line using non-encrypted page!!!

so.. added placed and order.. and we'll see how long it will take them
to make a call..

if 2224 is really discontinued (it lists on Eheim web site, and all
the british on-line stores have parts and pumps galore...), may be I
should stock up further on the parts.

sigh...

I know the feeling  I have a 2236  which is listed  as Ecco  but recently  they changed the design  and added a bit  and called it a Pro  If i try  to find certain  parts   specific to Ecco2236   all i get listed is parts  for the "newer version"   and I am  UK based

Et tu Andy? It really is no fun for the consumer when they do stuff
like this :-(

at any rate, at least in the US, here's the Eheim web site.
http://eheimparts.com If you're leery of putting in credit card
number on a non-encrypted site as I am (it's horrible.. since it has
the "VeriSign secure" logo on it, but it's hot "https" nor the "lock"
icon doesn't appear on the browser), you can do what I did, which was
to put in all zeros for the CC number, then call them on their toll-
free number and give them the credit card number over the phone with
your web order number as a reference...

anyway, I did get a confirmation e-mail saying Eheim shipped my part,
so... hopefully I'll get my media basket soon.

One silverlining on all this is that the HOT magnum has enough flow
rate that the cheap surface skimmer I have seems to work better with
it. It's the only way to keep the springtail population in check
(douse the tank with Melafix and then suck them up when they start
floating on the water with the surface skimmer) I can't do without
it. I tried taking it off, and within weeks I had jumping fleas all
over the tank (yuck!). My neons seem to eat them for a snack in my
small tank, so it's not an issue there, but seems like the rasboras
don't care for them. I thought about buying the Ehim surface skimmer,
but it doesn't seem to work with the Ehim inlet kit which I use (makes
priming/starting the filter easier without having to suck the
outlet). may be I will start another topic on surface skimmers..
