So, I just watched Darjeeling Limited in the movies. Now, I am really
craving some Indian food. Give me some daal, ASAP, please! ;-)

What's your favorite Indian dish?

Unfortunately I haven't had much experience with Indian food- I know
my girlfriend goes to an Indian restaurant in Fort Washington that
she is crazy about- I will have to get the name of it and share! We
had planned on going a few times but life got in the way- maybe I will
make it a point to get there soon!

Yum! Had Indian today, finally! Daal, samosas, fresh cucumber with
various chutneys and yogurt, tandori chicken, vegetable fritters in
lentil, chicken in red curry, lamb in lentils & green curry, naan
bread, yum! yum! yum! And my favorite dessert, sweet curdled milk
balls in light syrup!

Without a doubt, my Mom's samosas are simply The Best. The filling is
keema, a spicy meat and pea mixture, and the bread is very similar to
a puff pastry. I grew up on these samosas and made them in my
family's Indian restaurant, alongside parathas and pappadams, and
don't even bother to order in restaurants. They are wonderful as a
snack, an appetizer, or even a meal, as I can get downright
gluttonous, eating one juicy samosa right after the other! They are
always waiting for me at every visit home. Now that I have found my
pepper palate, I enjoy them with her delicious onion chutney. She
also makes coconut samosas (toasted with cinnamon) for my nieces, who
have not inherited my siblings' appetite for hot.

My Mom was suppose to visit this month & give me a serious lesson in
cooking my favorite Ali family recipes: keema, lamb biryani, chicken
korma. Nothing is written and after teaching seven other children,
she was probably tired when she got to me, the most impatient. I have
also been reluctant to learn because this comfort food always kept me
feeling like a kid, safe and loved. But, at age 80, she had to
cancel this trip for medical reasons, which she's never done before.
Thus, I am already looking at flights to see her and finally be
patient enough to learn a family tradition that perhaps someday I will
pass on.

Lesu,

I was so touched by your posting. I hope that you get to visit your
mom soon, and enjoy the feeling of being like a kid again, this time,
cooking together!

XOXO,

Min
