Yes- Date night on a Monday- why not...the weather is sooo beautiful
and like Donna-I really enjoy my yard- having the breezeway is like
having an extra room in the spring/summer, so I like to be out there
as much as I can!! Last night I put the outdoor stereo on, poured a
glass of cold glass of Bella Sera Pinot Gregio....and fired up the
grill!! Tonight it's going to be steaks on the grill.....pretty
ordinary, right? BUT the rub for the steaks was not ordinary at
all...very simple but VERY GOOD! I found the recipe in the newspaper
last year but never got around to trying it out...until last night.
It's a dry rub of UNSWEETENED Cocoa powder- such as Hersheys and
finely ground coffee beans, although I used instant coffee
granules...Use equal amounts and add pinch or two of cinnamon- rub
steaks down w/olive oil S&P, then massage your dry rub into the
steaks- really coat them well. Toss them on the grill and let the
flames do their job....BE CAREFUL- at this point you may have a circle
of strangers wanting to get into your yard just from the aromas
alone!! Sneak into the house at this point and grab that second glass
of vino and return to the grill where you will now start tossing and
turning the steaks- really firing up the flames- take off the grill
and LET REST----VERY IMPORTANT- under some foil for about 10-15
minutes- Go ahead and make your salad or start your corn...or dare I
say a 3rd glass? OK then, the steaks should be charred on the outside
but moist, pink and succulent on the inside...This obviously goes well
with any type of sides- I served w/ a salad of Baby spinach, sliced
strawberries, blue cheese, red onion in a balsamic dressing. It was a
great way to welcome spring, soak up the great weather and check out my
yard to see what's popping up!!

Renee - I sooo wish we lived closer! I would be the neighbor who just
happens to stop by with a quicj question just as you are starting to
cook... I promise I would bring a bottle of wine... or a basket of
freshly picked lettuces.

Speaking of, I harvested a basket full of butter lettuce and arugula
last night and made a huge fresh salad... avocado, tomato and thinly
sliced red onion topped with a white balsamic vinaigrette. Mmmmm.
