Greetings Everyone!
Last week we made a trip up to Stonington, Maine to spend a few days painting. I was just bowled over by the place. When I first began to think of where to go for a few days painting trip (it had to be within a day's drive) - I emailed a plein air artist that I knew painted all over New England. I asked her if she had ever painted in Blue Hill Maine in the wintertime. Blue Hill and Jackman were 2 places that l thought might be good painting towns. Anyway, she said "Well, if you are going to Blue Hill, just keep going and go to Stonington - it is much better". So that is exactly what we did.
And Great Googely Moogely!!!!!! It was BEAUTIFUL! Stonington is an itty bitty lobster fishing village on the far tip of Deer Isle off the coast of Maine. So quaint and just WOW. We could watch the lobster boats leave the harbor at the crack of dawn and come back in the evening. Since it is winter, all the tourists are gone so it was just us and the locals. We were able to get a motel room right on the harbor - our window looked out on the bay and the winter rates were so affordable.
I am including a few pics of the harbor and two paintings that I started while there and finished (I think) when we returned home. Speaking of home, we left Stonington just as it started to snow and had to drive home in a blizzard with white out conditions. One of the hazards of winter up here - so it was a little scary but we made it.
If you ever have the opportunity to come this far north - please make a visit to Stonington.
Stay warm while you paint -
Mary
