 Greetings Gentle Members:

Guess what!  The snow is finally melted from my garden - Yeah!  Now I can plant.   But it also signals that it is time for the Great Migration.  That is when I move all my stuff (my studio) from my bedroom upstairs to the back porch downstairs.  It is finally warm enough for me to paint on the back porch - not balmy you understand, but with long johns and a sweater it is tolerable.    Every Fall when the cold weather sets in I must bring all my studio stuff inside and either put it in the spare bedroom or my bedroom.  So every Spring the whole process gets reversed.  I hate it.  But I'm sure that there are many other artists out there that suffer the same fate, so I won't whine for long.

I have started a really large landscape 24x36 and am only about half done.  I began by coating the canvas with burnt umber and while it was still wet, I wiped out where the lightest lights would be.  Then I blocked in the composition with the burnt umber - moving things around to get a pleasing design.  When that was dry, I began to indicate where the darkest darks would be located.  Next using a large brush I smeared alternate layers of sap green and burnt sienna in various places.  I love how those two colors compliment each other - it makes for a really warm and inviting landscape.  Anyway, I am posting the progression of the painting below and as you can see, there is still much to do.  I don't know why, but I am really drawn to thick forested scenes.

I am also posting a painting that I just completed.  Quite a few years ago, I had painted a similar scene and it was very popular.  Not only did I sell the original but several prints of it also.  So I thought I would try it again, but make an improved versionIt is called "To Market, To Market".

A warm "Welcome" and "Thank you" to new collectors Michael from New Jersey and Virginia also from New Jersey.  They  both purchased their paintings from my eBay site.

Until next time, let's plant something! -
Mary
