I have finally completed a commissioned portrait for my daughter's mother-in-law. This portrait of her daughter will complete the set of portraits of all her children. It was a real pleasure to paint and came together easily but I waited to post it here, until I had given her a peek at it first.
Right now it is hanging in the gallery here in town and will be shipped off to Memphis next month. Katie (the subject of the portrait)and I have never met, so I worked totally from photos sent by her mother. Since there was no opportunity to meet Katie and observe her mannerism, I asked my daughter if Katie's personality was closer to her brother Jeremy's (quiet and serious) or her other brother Jamie's (outgoing and funny). When told that Katie was like Jeremy, I was able to determine which photo to use - the one where she is deep in thought during ballet. Otherwise I would have chosen a photo of her laughing or at least smiling.
You should always observe a person to try to capture their personality as much as possible. People who are always laughing will look very different if you paint them without a smile - likewise a person who is serious by nature will not look normal if you paint them with a smile.
Hope life treats you gently,
Mary
