Hi All,

As I've been working through the code-base for Fascinator I have been trying to develop a model for improving how we deploy the core system. As I mentioned in the migration doc*, there are a number of modules that aren't really "core" to fascinator and often don't get full testing on release. I very much want to trim down the number of core modules so that our release mechanism is substantially easier and better reflects the testing that's going on.

So, to do more than talk about it, I have setup a range of repositories under https://github.com/dedickinson . Basically, I have taken the main TF repo and split out the plugins that I suggest are non-core. My preliminary compiles show it all working fine.

HOWEVER, one end result of this is that you won't be able to build fascinator as a demo system by using the core platform. I suggest that I resolve this by creating a sample build that mimics the current TF build you get when you run the core at present.

I will make a very specific point here though - we don't have enough resources to keep all of these plugins running (some were experiments that went nowhere). The nice thing about our GitHub setup though is that you can clone a plugin and update/improve it yourself or even chat on the list and offer to take on management of the plugin. The ReDBox team will take on certain plugins (such as the Fedora 3 storage plugin) as part of their work but things like the ICE2 and IMS transformers just aren't on our radars.

Feedback is most welcome - make sure you copy in both the TF and ReDBox lists!

Hi Duncan and all,

I know this is a rather belated reply, but regarding the ICE2 content conversion, we're going to be using that in the work we're doing at UWS on a file-based data capture app to run alongside ReDBOX and create data sets - we will need to look at what's most important to maintain, but I am pretty sure having web previews of office docs and spreadsheets will be on the list. Lloyd H has made a good start on the basic framework, based on the old trunk that contained the ICE plugin.

I'm not sure what happened with this work you mentioned in this thread, but some time in the recent past the ICE converter stopped working on trunk. It appears to run, but but seems to fail silently (although maybe there's a log we haven't found). Lloyd will be looking into this tomorrow but I thought I'd ask if anyone knows what, if anything may have affected a render plugin (ffmpeg still works and will generate image variants after ICE fails).

IIRC the default config was pointing at a USQ web service... was that changed?

Hi Peter,

At this point I haven't commenced any efforts based on the suggestion I put forward. The QCIF-ReDBox team has not changed anything around the ICE plugin that I'm aware of.

Cheers,

Duncan

Hi Greg,

Default congig still points to USQ and that's been running happily for ages, although it is down today. I have been testing against ICE in the NeCTAR cloud and at UWS but that's actually irrelevant because I don't think that it is even sending HTTP posts to ICE.

Ok, I'm out of easy thoughts then. To confirm Duncan's response, I haven't gone near the ICE plugin since leaving USQ.

Good to know the USQ one is still there in a pinch. Are any of the others you mentioned both publicly available and reliable? I was thinking about demo'ing something about our old PMRC system to someone the the other day.

Ta,
Greg
