Devo- Instinctively and Intentionally developing my relationship with God, what's the difference?
read John 6:35, KJV:
And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to
me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
So what this is saying,
If you COME ---> NO hunger
If you BELIEVE ---> NO thirst
Isn’t this kinda of backwards though? Usually you believe in something before you move definitively towards it. You believe that your mom is home, so you go over. You believe your friend is available, so you call. Right?
The way I see this verse is that it basically has you reacting before you decide. You are making moves without having already resolved in your head that’s the action you are going to take. So being with Jesus (the come) should be instinctive, and I reinforce this by believing, which is intentional. In order to continue feeding off of Him, I have to continually go towards Him. (Draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh unto you. Jame 4:8).
Taking this concept even further, you eat bread when you are hungry. You drink
water when you are thirsty. Right? However, “Man shall not live on bread alone, but
on every word that comes out of the mouth of God,” Matthew 4:4 (paraphrased).
So with that being said, we know that if you don’t eat, you’ll starve. But if you don’t
drink, you’ll die. It so much more important that you stay hydrated. Keep cultivating
that belief. Keep being intentional about that relationship with God. Keep yourself
hydrated.
And we also know, that eating makes us thirsty. So just by coming to Him,
instinctively, it drives forward our intent. It makes us want to believe in Him more.
It substantiates our belief. Instinct is a soap box on which to prop our intent. Some
things “just happen” in our relationship with God. They our out of our control, and
we aren’t the orchestrators of it. That’s said in Matthew 22:14, paraphrased, “Many
are invited, but few are chosen.” God picked me. He gave me the instinct to “come.”
Then I must back that up with belief. Then right on the fringes of belief are the things
I cannot understand or see. This is when God yet again beckons me to come. Then
in that are reinforcements to my belief or increased areas of belief. Then the fringes,
then the beckon, then the fringes, and it keeps repeating. He wills me to come. My
job is to believe.| |
