Hey folks, long time no see (some of ye anyway...)
I am building a set of Visby -style gauntlets. They will look
almost nothing like
http://www.armourarchive.org/patterns/gauntlet_thorz/
except vaguely similar mechanics.
I am making mock-ups for the parts of the right hand gauntlet out
of something like 22 gauge steel. I am working with heavier steel and
am using the lighter stuff to finalize the design so I don't have to
make a mistake with the heavy stuff; which is a real pain to cut once,
let alone twice...
Right now, there are two demigauntlets and I imagine there will
be one (hopefully) or two parts for the wrist, thumb and at least one
finger of the right hand. I have a practically unlimited supply of
the thinner metal if you would want to flip the paper pattern over and
cut out a left. It can be done with tin snips. I'm pretty sure it's
22 gauge, which incidentally is the minimum for rigid material in SCA
(but not Adrian cut and thrust) rapier armor, although you'd have to
mic it to make sure. I personally think it is too thin for rapier.
But against foam weapons--it would be fine. The metal is white on one
side and dark green on the other, I'd say paint them first. Smooth
them off and pop rivet them to a leather glove and viola! Dag
gauntlets.
If you'd like them when I'm done with the project, drop me a
line. I live in the Eau Gallie area of Melbourne.
