As most of you know, the Davis family used to own the land that Saginaw Valley sits on.  I went down there awhile ago and found out that they have a file on the Davis family.  While it mostly has to do with Richard Davis' (grandpa in these stories) descendants, it did have this awesome find.

Of particular interest to me is that it mentions Richard Davis' Uncle John, which would be Laura and mine's ancestor who is rarely mentioned in any Davis paperwork.  It was nice to see his name.

The personal touch on these stories is great.

Thank you, Richard, for sharing this.  I remember reading it years ago, but never got a copy of it.  Brings back memories of helping Grandma Nell (Davis Gilman Allen) cleaning out the old farm house and listening to her stories as my Mom and older sister helped her.  I think the three of us young girls got in their way more than anything.

Early on in my parent’s marriage, they lived on the “sandhill”.  My father was driving home from work with Ernie Gilman when they were hit head on by a south bound car on Michigan in February of 1947.  Ernie, Nell’s husband, was killed and my father spent many months recuperating.  Nell came to help my Dad and my older sister when my mother had to go to work.  That is how Nell, who is my cousin on my mother’s side (Davis), ended up meeting my grandfather Allen and became the only paternal grandmother that I ever knew.  The stories that she told about their lives on the Davis farms were always so interesting, especially about her and Stella and some of their exploits with my maternal grandmother, Vera Mae Davis Patterson.  Who would have thought that they could steal the horse & buggy from the barn and sneak into Saginaw at night?!

I am glad that she mentioned John and his part in clearing the land.  Makes you proud, right?

Saginaw Valley may have taken all of our farms, but the memories and their legacies live on in us.

I love reading about our history.   My son goes to Saginaw Valley.    Its weird thinking that his ancestors walked on the same ground he does...how many generations?         We did give the school some copies ofnews  articles that my grandfather Raymond Davis  saved about the Davis land.
