Happy Labor Day to Everyone!
When I first started researching the Davis family in Michigan, I was struck by how much things did not make sense from one census year to the next. We have discussed this before, that 1860 census was very odd, in that family member names listed did not necessarily belong to the families that we know. People that were on the 1870 census, and were old enough to be on the 1860 census were not there. And people that were on the 1860 census never appeared again.
Has anyone taken a closer look?
I have put together a spreadsheet for the Davis and related families that were living in Kochville at the time. It is truly amazing how incorrect it is.
Charles W Grant was the census enumerator. He did the census for Kochville, as well as most of the towns in Saginaw County.
For the most part, the name of the male head of household appears to be correct (with the normal errors in transcription to be expected). The ages and sex of the family names also appears to be correct. But the family member names are totally made up!
Peter, John, Mary and Susan seem to be the favorite names that he used!
Very interesting!
