I received a message from Rob Drew (CalSailor) on Ancestry.com who is also researching our same Michigan families.
He is descended from the Elijah Drew, Jr family but is also interested in pursuing the Jeremiah Davis line, and would like to find a connection between Simeon Davis of Corinth, Vermont, and our Jeremiah. I know I have researched that line (as well as many of you), and I could never find a connection.
He has done AncestryDNA. I have a AncestryDNA match to his sister “R.B”, but not to him. R.B. and I share many of the same AncestryDNA matches. (What is interesting is that the AncestryDNA matches we share are to the Davis and Walters families, and not necessarily the Drew family. Which further goes to show how intermingled these families were!
In his latest message me, Rob writes:
“I've had some luck using DNA to jump over (or thru) brick walls. This is especially true if there are living male-line descendants willing to test their y-DNA. There's a Drew y-DNA project at FamilyTreeDNA, for which I'm the volunteer admin. We've pretty well demonstrated that Elijah Drew Sr (parents unknown) is descended from William Drew of NH b. 1623 in Devonshire England. This is because a number of us have exactly/nearly the same y-DNA as William's descendants who have contiguous, documented lines.
I wonder if we might be able to do this with the Davis line? Among your cousins, are there direct line Davis men? If so, the challenge will be finding well-documented, direct line male descendants of Simeon Davis, so we could compare y-DNA. I might just take on looking for living, documented male descendants of Simeon Davis. If we get y-DNA tests that matched, it wouldn't prove descent from Simeon - but would imply either that or descent from an ancestor or brother of Simeon.”
Are any of you direct Davis men? Have you had your y-DNA tested?
Happy July 4th to All!
Regards,
Laura
