There are 3 parts to this.
First, I was going to make *.jpg files of the individual images in Karen’s “SC Article Nelson Davis” article. It turned out to be more difficult than I thought. Each image has overlapping information, and there was no easy way to do it. It is a great newspaper story and I did not want the story to get “lost in translation”, so what I did instead was type the article into a Word document and then created a PDF file from it.
It is a great story, it makes you appreciate all the hard work our ancestors encountered, and is especially poignant about the two children they lost. I liked the part about how Indian Jim lived on their property and helped Richard clear the land. And Richard would take the baskets that Indian Jim’s “squaw” made to town.
I am now very confused about Indian Jim and Indian Dave. I have heard stories about each one of them. I think the Indians were very much a part of the lives of our Davis and related families
Second, I have included a *.jpg file of the list that Karen included in her obits.docx file, “List of Davis and Dupraw Family Members”.
Who is Fred Brandel and his family? Are they related to the Davises or the Dupraws? Neither Karen or I can figure out who Fred Brandel is! (The name is written as Brandle, but I believe it should be Brandel)
I started pulling together records for him and his family and cannot find any connection! Other than that fact that the Brandels were usually living close-by to the Davis and/or Dupraw families on many census records,

And as we all know by now, all of these families are interconnected.
Third, I liked the story about Fred Davis and his $300 house. It confirms what we know about Jeremiah coming from “Cataraugust” County, New York. (I think one part of the story misidentifies him as Ebenezer, but then corrects itself in the next paragraph.) And how did Kochville get the nickname “Hardscrabble”?
Laura
Good evening everyone.
Thank you, Laura, for the docs. I too have a copy of the "Big White House" article. I remember when I was very small going to the house with my step grandmother, Nellie Davis, when it was empty. I think that we were there to clean it out as possibly renters had been living in it, but can't remember much other than it was Grandma Nell's parents house.
I know that we think our early Davis ancestors were quite confusing, but it continued. My tree is really crazy as my maternal grandmother was Vera Mae Davis, daughter of Jeremiah and Jennie Baker Davis. But to confuse matters more, my paternal grandfather, George F. Allen, married Vera's cousin, Nellie Davis. Nell was one of Richard and Elizabeth's daughters. Grandma Nell was the only paternal grandmother I knew as my father lost his mother when he was only 19. Grandpa Allen met Nell through my parents when they lived in Kochville on the "sand hill" and they married shortly before I was born. So, my paternal step-grandmother is actually my 1st cousin 2x removed on my maternal side. My father was in the auto accident that killed Nell's second husband, Ernie Gilman. Weird, I know.
The Brandle names do not ring a bell with me, but I will ask my father the next time I call him. He might remember something. I found that it is spelled correctly as Brandle as there are listing in the Saginaw Obituary Index for Fred and Emily.
I would like to "meet" Karen or at least learn her lineage. I have kept my tree private on Ancestry as early on someone took all of my information and posted it on his tree with no credit being given. So if anyone wants information from me now, I will share, but not publicly on Ancestry. If Karen is willing, would you give her my email address?
I will try to scan some of my Saginaw News articles when I take a short vacation in two weeks. I will attach them for the list.
Kathy,
Karen and you may more closely related than you realize.
Karen’s grandfather was Raymond, son of Jeremiah and Jennie, and brother of Vera Mae. In fact Raymond and Vera Mae were very close in age, about 1-2 years apart.
I will pass along your email address, and ask her if it is OK to pass along hers to you! By the way, what is your direct email address?
I am not sure which way you are telling me you believe Brandel is spelled, but it is spelled Brandel on Fred’s death certificate, obituary and his headstone.
I more I learn about this family, I keep bumping into other families as I add more information to my trees.
Laura
