Unrelated to the Davis family…
I found this picture in an old photo album of my Dad’s.
I have no idea who the nun in the picture is.
Does anyone know the location of this picture? Or what order the nun may be?
My Dad’s family was from Ireland, and they lived in the New York City area. (There were 4 sisters that came to America, and one that stayed in Ireland)
I have been emailing with a second cousin who lives in Ireland. Her Aunt Sheelah also came over to the United States, and was a nun for a short period of time during the 1940’s. We also believe she lived in Detroit, Michigan part of that time because that is where her Naturalization papers were filed.
But we have no idea if the nun in the below picture is Sheelah.
Recently, I posted the picture on Facebook, asking if anyone knew the location of the picture. In one of the replies, someone mentioned that his wife is from Detroit, Michigan, and “stonework like this dots the landscape”.
Any ideas!
Laura

I am not sure that the picture was taken on the campus at Mercy. I worked there in admissions in ’74 and do not recall ever seeing this on campus and I can’t imagine that it is a statue that would have been destroyed. I would guess that since she was from Ireland, that she would have been in the Sisters of Mercy however as they began in Ireland. I would guess that she might have been at Mercy College which is now University of Detroit Mercy since about 1990.
Maybe she was on a visitation somewhere else as it seems as if it is some kind of a commemorative photo?

That would make a difference who the nun is!
It may not be Sheelah then, as Sheelah came to the United States in 1937, and did not enter the sisterhood until after 1940, or at least that is what I believe to be true, based on what Mary has told me.
But I still would like to figure out who the nun is and the older woman, and where the picture was taken!
One more picture, this time I know when it was taken. (I have included it as an attachment this time)
The two people on the left are my Dad’s parents. My Dad is setting on the ledge. I am guessing, he is about two years old. He was born in 1920, so that would make the year about 1922.
Is the older woman on the right the same woman as the woman in the picture with the nun? I assuming the 3 girls are daughters of the woman. Regarding the youngest daughter on the left, does she look like she could be the nun in the previous pictures? Possibly, but I can’t say for sure. (The facial structure doesn’t quite match for me!)
What types of uniform are the two daughters to the right wearing?
What doesn’t make sense to me, is that this family “does not fit” in either of my grandparents’s families.
But if I can figure out where the location of the original picture of the nun and statue, I may be able to figure out this mystery.
What would you even call a statue like that?
It may not be Detroit. I was just hoping for any remote chance it might be!

Dress almost looks pre 1940's ..... With the older lady this maybe was something she had before the war effort...

2nd picture to go along with this ….
And, I don’t know who the older woman is either!
Also, is the second picture taken at the same location as the first picture?

Allen,
You have been a big help, and now I have to ask you one more favor.
I have attached two more pictures.
One is of the unknown older woman, and her 3 daughters. The other is of Sheelah Geeany, who Mary and I initially believed to be the nun in the photos, but now I am not sure.
I am assuming the Unknown Curtin family is the same one as the previous picture that included my Dad and his parents.
The picture of Sheelah is not very clear, but I hope you can work with it.
Can you tell if the nun in the picture is the youngest of the 3 daughters or if she is Sheelah?
That would be a HUGE help to Mary and me if you could figure that out.
Thanks,
Allen,
You are the man! Thank you so very much!
I completely missed the mark on that one!
I knew Sheelah did not quite look like the nun. And I knew the youngest daughter did not quite look like the nun either! And, I knew the older woman was somehow related to the nun. But somehow, I was never considering the other daughters! I definitely agree, the middle daughter does look like the nun!
I still need to figure out who these people are, but at least I can share with Mary that Sheelah is not the nun in these pictures!
Thanks, again!
