New on 50 Watts: Infinite Hatch: The Book Covers of Daniel Mroz

The covers come from 1000 Poland Book Covers and will be the first of a series of posts from that book. I emailed briefly with the authors about helping them do an English edition, but their rights agreements with all the artists only cover Poland. So I would saw buy the sucker if you are interested in book design and illustration or Polish poster artists (they're all in there). At 1040 pages (3 inches thick!), it's not a candidate for print-on-demand reprints and once it's sold out it will surely be gone.

In anticipation of this post, I uploaded three old posts of Polish book covers: http://50watts.com/filter/poland

After reading Lem's Solaris a few years ago I remember learning that the English edition is a translation from the French which is a translation from the Polish original. I loved it (my main memory of the book is the main character sitting on the beach of the gooey brain ocean) and didn't give two thoughts about the translation (definitely not always the case), but it makes me wonder how this can be the case with a fairly famous book. This is Solaris! What hope does any Polish/Russian/Eastern Euro science fiction book have...

At any rate, another of Lem's translators, Michael Kandel, is fantastic.
