Hello, my name is Carl and I'm a sabbath breaker.

It's around this time of year I have to tell myself that quite often.  Right about now, most of my days are spent head down, nose in the planner, fingers on the computer keyboard attending to "my" work -all the tasks that I fill my days with.  All the paperwork and emails, meetings and web site upkeep.  I've attached myself to this body of busywork like my life depended on it.

It is hard to just stop, take a walk, read that book, or look up in the evening sky to see seven different shades of orange and yellow.

And then comes Sunday.  After a busy morning running programs at church I return to my computer that afternoon and start pecking away at my work again.  Get a jump on things for tomorrow, I say.

I always forget God's first word about keeping sabbath.  That word is "stop," or "don't," or even "quit it."  Take a break like I did, kid.  Live a little.  And without remembering that first word, it is almost impossible to come to the second which is, "this day is to be spent in my service."

I wonder what the world would be like if Christians remembered to rest from their work, and in that resting could hear the call to God's service - which is the sharing of Jesus' love with those most in need.

Carl

READ Exodus 20:8-11 If you put aside your work one day a week and used that time for the service of God, what would God have you do?  Now multiply that by 52.  In one year's time, what would God be able to do through you for the world?
