PULPIT and TABLE
I grew up at Metropolitan United
Methodist Church in the city of Detroit. In the front of our
cathedral-like sanctuary is a giant pulpit with an inscription in stone
on it. "PREACH THE WORD" it says.
That must be daunting. What if you quote somebody wrongly. What if
you are sweaty and nervous and accidentally drop your manuscript all
over the altar area? What if you bore people?
Many preachers have served at Metro successfully, it was the largest
Methodist church at one point in its history. But from time to time
I'm sure the preaching - even at Metro - has fallen flat.
That's why I'm glad that Jesus offers another means of gracing us with
his presence and guidance. In the celebration of Holy Communion we
pray that the bread and wine become the body and blood of Jesus so that
we may become the Body of Christ for the world. Our act of
thanksgiving (the meaning of Eucharist) is a celebration of
this mysterious connection to God's love.
We have always been a people who've needed the word and the table. I
hope you have a place to celebrate both regularly.

READ Luke 24:27,
30-31 - We know Jesus fully when we are immersed in the
nourishment of his Word and his Sacrament. What do you know of Jesus
primarily through Scripture? What do you know of him and his kingdom
primarily through the act of Holy Communion?
