12/19/06 Little did I know that there are subways in Rochester, MN. These tunnels connecting all the various buildings of the Mayo Clinic aren't filled with train tracks though. Instead they are pedestrian walkways allowing nurses, doctors, patients, and people trying to find the basement outlet of Chicago style three flavor mixed popped corn a snow and wind chill free passage. If you aren't used to this mode of travel, like me, you will tend to overdress when heading out on the town. Because you are actually heading out UNDER the town, and the subterranean passages are heated, I am constantly looking to shed my layers of coat, mittens, hat, and the occasional set of Under Armour (tm). It's funny that this is one of the few times in my life where I want to get rid of a coat. Usually coats last me years and I have slowly collected a closet full of them - used on various occasions and filling out various stylistic needs. Sometimes I am reminded by this collection of just how un-Christian it is. We are supposed to be the people who if holding two coats, give one to someone in need. Maybe I could remember this during this Advent season, a time when we wait in anticipation for the coming of a God who was so overflowing with love for creation that God gave us Jesus. Maybe Christmas has just that much cosmic implication. , And maybe its also about participating in that overflowing love by giving some coats to the folks who don't have heated walkways to stroll on. Yours in Christ, Carl Thomas Gladstone READ Luke 3:7-17 How are you a tax collector, challenging crowd, and soldier in the face of Jesus? How will he winnow out of you those behaviors that stand in his way of love and giving? |
