February 9, 2007 This week we've been looking at the book of Daniel, particularly the part where he opts for a vegetarian diet instead of all the rich stuff from the kings table. As a former vegetarian I think that is awesome. Especially when Daniel, in the end, wins a beauty contest against other young guys who did "eat the fat and drink the sweet." We are offered so many conveniences in our culture - from disposable toilet scrubbers to packaged food to steroids to fast money on the stock market. I wonder which of these we'll be able to abstain from in favor of the gifts from God that give true nourishment - from communities centered around the love of Christ, to programs for justice empowered by the Holy Spirit, to the hope of living in the prevenient grace of God the source of all good gifts. Yours in Christ, Carl Thomas Gladstone READ Daniel 1:8-21 What are the gifts of the world that offer limited nourishment when compared to the gifts of God? A Prayer For You - May today there be peace within. May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith. May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you. May you be content knowing you are a child of God. Let God's presence settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each and every one of us. |
