HEART and MIND
"This is simplicity: when
a steady view, a single intention of promoting God's glory, of doing
and suffering his blessed will, runs through our whole soul. fills all
our heart, and is the constant spring of all our thoughts, desires, and
purposes." - J. Wesley
John Wesley was ridiculously
well-read. On Mondays and Tuesdays he read the classics. Wednesdays
was logic and ethics. Thursdays, biblical languages. Saturdays was
devoted to poetry and developing his preaching. And Sundays was the
big day for theology.
And yet, the early Methodist movement was built on religious pietism -
a religious view that through practices of the faith it was the heart
that was transformed.
The Christian life is lived in this intersection of heart and mind. We
are instructed in the faith, we learn prayers and creeds, we hear the
history of the church. And then we take all that knowledge with us as
we open our hearts to one another in prayer, mission, and worship.
So don't be fooled - it's our body, mind, spirit, and voice that we put
on the line when we call ourselves Christian. No one will win out over
the others if we are seeking to live in the fullness of Jesus.
