WORD and SPIRIT
Bibliolatry and mystical fanaticism - we've all seen examples of them.  >From religious pundits blaming disease on some transgression of a biblical text, to centers for "spirituality" that claim to know the gospel without ever opening the pages of our central text...we should be wary of either extreme.

John and Charles Wesley were strong supporters of a Christian life lived in balance between those two extremes.  On the one hand they desired to read the bible as authoritative without allowing it to become authoritarian.  On the other hand they desired to be a people connected to the movement of God's spirit while keeping such experienced grounded in the root of our faith, the story of God's redemption of creation as known in the Old and New testaments.

I think every time we ask questions about the bible, turn to it's pages when we find ourselves in need, create art after being inspired by its content we give ourselves the opportunity to interact with this interplay of Word and Spirit as God would want!

In the asurity of the Word and the challenge of the Spirit,
Carl
