i do yoga occationally and i made sure there's no chanting either. like renee, i think it's some form of exercise. like to me it's just stretches.. however, i am aware that they believe in the flow of inner energy "Qi", which i dont believe in and they have countless poses. But so far, in this class that i occationally attend, they dont really emphasize on any of these and I dont look up the meaning of poses watsoever. so it really seems like just stretches and that different poses are a different challenges. Now i dont feel the need to go for claasses but i can still practice these stretches at home.
I used to join martial arts at school, Wushu, but only for 2 classes as i was told its association with taoism, confucianism, buddhism, and hundreds of other chinese philosophical systems is undeniable. Also, I felt like I dont see it as a form of defense (like really im not gonna put those skills to use when someone tries to attack me... plus i won't carry a sword with me everywhere i go ) So i quite.
You're right, it is still a gray area for many.. It 's like when i found out that we're not encouraged to read the Harry Potter series. when i heard of this, i've already read a few . And to me, i dont feel like my faith in God is threatened after reading and im well aware that Hogwards, magic wands and platform 9 and 3 quarters dont exist. I can understand if kids are not encouraged to read but don't feel that it's relevant to me , who was already in college at that time.
