I have a project with 10 CAN nodes that has a intermittent problem
where 2 of the nodes (at different times) stop communicating on the
CAN and corrupt the whole bus. It seems to happen when they are
around a lot of electrical noise.

Initially the nodes were supposed to recover from busoff automatically
and they do that. If I short the CAN bus and they all come back
online when they are supposed to. In this case the processor that is
bad will not come back online. If I hold the input to the transceiver
in the recessive state so it can not transmit to the bus, the rest of
the bus returns to normal.
I have tried recovering by just issuing an init to the control
register (normally works but not in this case)
I have tried re-initializing the CAN module just like I do from a
hardware reset. Does not work in this case.
I have tried issuing a software reset to the whole processor. THAT
DOES NOT WORK IN THIS CASE.
If I issue a hardware reset to the reset in line to the processor the
CAN controller goes back to normal. (that is not a real option)

The status register indicates various combinations of BOFF, EWRN,
RXOK, TXOK and LEC depending on when I read it.

I've been working on this for weeks and I don't know why it occurs or
how to fix it if it does occur. Has anybody seen anything like this?

Hi!

I believe you might receive better help by posting your inquiry at the
CANLIST (See http://www.canlist.org/). This is a group of CAN
specialists all over the world. Your inquiry is very application
specific and my CAN forum concentrates more on providing information
on the CAN standard.

Again, I am sure these guys will be able to help you...;-))

Sincerely,
Wilfried
