Fender has announced some 'deluxe' basses for 2015 made with a
body-wood that I haven't previously heard of - "okoume" - does anyone
have experience with this as a tonewood? "

"Fender has released a trio of new Deluxe Active basses
featuring okoume, an African hardwood with an attractive
straight grain and distinctive reddish-brown hue."

I haven't heard of it as a tonewood, but I have heard of it being used for bass cabinet building as an alternative to regular birch plywood for a high strength to weight ratio. I know the fEARful builders are into it.

Sounds like it would be really crap in every aspect other than being light-weight, despite the comment about "high-end acoustic guitars".

G&L uses it in some instruments, which I suspect would not be the case were it "crap".

It's now 5 years since you posted, but this looks like a case of "knowing before trying". I've seen quite a few people that "know before trying".
I've been using Okoume in my very high end builds. It has a very resonant tap tone, works well (a little tough on bits, etc), sands nicely, although needs a little bit of grain filler sometimes. It looks very nice as a natural solid body, and also takes lacquer finishes well.
I play every guitar I build it at least one show or session before I put it up for sale so I can be sure that it does everything the way I would want, so I can tell you with great certainty that it's a wonderful tonewood for the Jazzmasters & Tele style guitars I build. They are very light and resonant, and transfer their resonance very well through the pickups & amps.
