to The Book of Mormon in the Classical Historywriting

Who was the historical Mormon (311-421 CE)

One of the last books of the Book of Mormon is called "the Book
Mormon" which runs from 321 CE to 421 CE. It describes historical
events situated in Zarahemlah and the land northwards, which are united
under the judge and general Mormon. Mormon was born in 311 CE, was
gravely injured in 385 with all his people in a horrible battle with
the stinking, dirty Lamanites, He however continues to live under
horrible circumstances, till he returns to dust in 421.

In conformance with my previous reconsolidation of the events in the
BoM, with the real European history, the land Zarahemlah is the land
above the Black Sea, between the rivers the Don and the Volga,
inhabited by the Goths in the 4th century. The river Sidon is the river
the Don.
The land northwards is Russia and Scandinavia, where Goths lived as
well, they were united under Jörmon-rekkr of the Eddah sages.

(Encyclopedia Britannica)
Ermanaric (d. "376") was a King of the Gothic Greuthingls. As king, he
allegedly ruled a vast empire located in today's Ukraine.. The exact
limits of his territory, however, are obscure, but it seems to have
stretched south of the Pripet Marshes between the Don_(Russia)" and
Djnester rivers.

Ermanaric's name in Old Norse (Eddah) is Jörmon-rekkr (rkkr-rich-rex)
Ermanaric is mentioned in two Roman sources; the writings of
Ammianus_Marcellinus and in Getica by the 6th century historian
Jordanes.
. According to Ammianus, Ermanaric is "a most warlike king" who
eventually commits suicide, facing the aggression of the Hun, who
invaded his territories in the 370s.
. His kingdom was destroyed and his people became subject to the Huns
for about 75 years.
. Jordanes claims that he successfully ruled the Goths until his death
at the age of 100 or 110

Before claiming that Mormon was Jörmon-Rkkr, de Ostro-Goth king
Ermanarich was, we will check more extensively the BoM verses for
similarities with the chaotic fragments known in history :

BoM: Mormon: 1:2
he came unto me, (I being about ten years of age, and I began to be
learned somewhat after the manner of the learning of my people) and he
said unto me: I perceive that thou art a sober child, and art quick to
observe;

The BoM dates this verse at 421 CE. So Mormon was born in 311 CE
That chosen sober child is a reference to Ostro, what originally means
Austere.
So Mormon was chosen because he was an Ostro-Goth, who choose their
leaders from the Amal clan.

1:5
And I, Mormon, being a descendant of Nephi, (and my father's name was
Mormon).

Earlier we said that Mormon comes from Meramun, flower king.
Ermanarich was from the Amal dynasty of the Gerulinger, Nordic Goths

1:6
And it came to pass that I, being eleven years old, was carried by my
father into the land southward, even to the land of Zarahemla.

This confirms that Mormon was born like Ermanarich in North Gothia, but
ruled from Southern Gothia.

1:7
The whole face of the land had become covered with buildings, and the
people were as numerous almost, as it were the sand of the sea

The southern Ostro Goths were very populous in the 4th century and of
special note is that in Crimea there have found many stone houses with
the use of cement.

Between 327 and 331 CE Mormon becomes a pirate who raids cities and
countries and is hunted from afar, a style not known of the Ermanaric,
but well known of the Crimean Goths.

(from Ukrainian tourist site:
By the 3rd Century CE, the Bosporean rule was almost over and the once
mighty kingdom dwindled. Aggressive Goths advanced from north of the
Sea of Azov and Goth pirates ruthlessly raided the Black Sea coastal
towns. By the 4th Century CE, the Huns conquered and burned what was
left of the Bosporan Kingdom.

Mormon 2:1
and it came to pass in that same year there began to be a war again
between the Nephites and the Lamanites. And notwithstanding I being
young, was large in stature; therefore the people of Nephi appointed me
that I should be their leader, or the leader of their armies.

Jörmon-rkkr in the Eddah sages was a big strong brute and the
Ostro-Goths choose their leaders

2:2
Therefore it came to pass that in my sixteenth year I did go forth at
the head of an army of the Nephites, against the Lamanites; therefore
three hundred and twenty and six years had passed away.

The Lamanites in this war have to be the Romans and around this time
the Goths were testing the Roman Limes, the river border of Donau and
Rhine

2:3
And it came to pass that in the three hundred and twenty and seventh
year the Lamanites did come upon us with exceedingly great power,
insomuch that they did frighten my armies; therefore they would not
fight, and they began to retreat towards the north countries..

Different Roman emperors did sent at this time armies and generals
against the Goths, with changing luck.

2:4
And it came to pass that we did come to the city of Angola, and we did
take possession of the city, and make preparations to defend ourselves
against the Lamanites. And it came to pass that we did fortify the city
with our might; but notwithstanding all our fortifications the
Lamanites did come upon us and did drive us out of the city.

Angola could be Angora the old name for present Ankara.

2:5
And they did also drive us forth out of the land of David.
2:6
And we marched forth and came to the land of Joshua, which was in the
borders west by the seashore.

This looks like the raid even reached Israel and the land Goshen
(Gaza-strip).

2:8
But behold, the land was filled with robbers and with Lamanites; and
notwithstanding the great destruction which hung over my people, they
did not repent of their evil doings; therefore there was blood and
carnage spread throughout all the face of the land, both on the part of
the Nephites and also on the part of the Lamanites; and it was one
complete revolution throughout all the face of the land.

A reference to the chaotic times of the struggle between Goths and the
East Romans

I have left out many religious verses talking about Christ, but in
325 CE was the council of Nicea and Theophila was named as the bishop
of Gothia.

2:16
And it came to pass that in the three hundred and forty and fifth year
the Nephites did begin to flee before the Lamanites; and they were
pursued until they came even to the land of Jashon, before it was
possible to stop them in their retreat.

There is a part of northern Turkey called Jason, near the Halys river

2:27
And my heart did sorrow because of this the great calamity of my
people, because of their wickedness and their abominations. But behold,
we did go forth against the Lamanites and the robbers of
Gadianton, until we had again taken possession of the lands of our
inheritance.

3 centuries earlier we recognized the Gadianton robbers as Han
Chinese, so I think this is the first reference to the Huns, who were
living in West China

2:29
And the Lamanites did give unto us the land northward, yea, even to the
narrow passage which led into the land southward. And we did give unto
the Lamanites all the land southwards

In 332 CE the East Roman emperor Constantine II routed the Goths and
made a treaty, defining the border and paid the Goths to defend the
Roman Limes in Moësia.

Mormon 3:4
And it came to pass that after this tenth year had passed away, making,
in the whole, three hundred and sixty years from the coming of Christ,
the king of the Lamanites sent an epistle unto me, which gave unto me
to know that they were preparing to come again to battle against us.

This is interesting. It looks that King Balamer of the Huns had sent an
ultimatum to Ermanarich the Ostro-Goth king. But I could not trace
anything like that.

3:5
And it came to pass that I did cause my people that they should gather
themselves together at the land Desolation, to a city which was in the
borders, by the narrow pass which led into the land southward.

Desolation is a very appropriate name for the Russian steppes. It is
said that Ermanaric founded in the middle of the 4th century CE the
steppes city Kiev.

3:7
And it came to pass that in the three hundred and sixty and first year
the Lamanites did come down to the city of Desolation to battle against
us; and it came to pass that in that year we did beat them, insomuch
that they did return to their own lands again.

A very early date for an Hun invasion, but possible, The city
Desolation probably was Kiev.

3:8
And in the three hundred and sixty and second year they did come down
again to battle. And we did beat them again, and did slay a great
number of them, and their dead were cast into the sea.

Sea of Asov ?

3:11
And it came to pass that I, Mormon, did utterly refuse from this time
forth to be a commander and a leader of this people, because of their
wickedness and abomination.

Normal reaction Ermanarich must have been an old man already.

Mormon 4:1
and now it came to pass that in the three hundred and sixty and third
year the Nephites did go up with their armies to battle against the
Lamanites, out of the land Desolation.

363 is an early date for the first Hun raids, but not impossible,
because they entered East Europe in 350 CE

4:2
And it came to pass that the armies of the Nephites were driven back
again to the land of Desolation. And while they were yet weary, a fresh
army of the Lamanites did come upon them; and they had a sore battle,
insomuch that the Lamanites did take possession of the city
Desolation, and did slay many of the Nephites, and did take many
prisoners.

No records of the Hun battle are left, but it is obvious that
Ermanarich tried to stop them at the Volga first and retreat to the
Don and Dnjester

4:6
And it came to pass that the Lamanites did make preparations to come
against the city Teancum.

There was the later Khazar city Tanais at the mound of the Don into the
Black Sea

4:9
And now all these things had been done, and there had been thousands
slain on both sides, both the Nephites and the Lamanites.

I have left out many verses with unknown struggles between the Hun and
the Goths, but the Hun battle must have been a long and furious one,
because its echo was still heard a millennium later.

4:11
And it is impossible for the tongue to describe, or for man to write a
perfect description of the horrible scene of the blood and carnage
which was among the people, both of the Nephites and of the
Lamanites; and every heart was hardened, so that they delighted in the
shedding of blood continually.

4:13
And it came to pass that the Lamanites did take possession of the city
Desolation, and this because their number did exceed the number of the
Nephites.

Hun hordes

4:14
And they did also march forward against the city Teancum, and did drive
the inhabitants forth out of her, and did take many prisoners both
women and children, and did offer them up as sacrifices unto their idol
gods.

This fits in very well with the horror stories about the Huns, pagan
animists

Description of Huns By Ammianus Marcellinus CE 390
The people called Huns, barely mentioned in ancient records, live
beyond the sea of Azof, on the border of the Frozen Ocean, and are a
race savage beyond all parallel. At the very moment of birth the cheeks
of their infant children are deeply marked by an iron, in order that
the hair instead of growing at the proper season on their faces, may be
hindered by the scars; accordingly the Huns grow up without beards, and
without any beauty. They all have closely knit and strong limbs and
plump necks; they are of great size, and low legged, so that you might
fancy them two-legged beasts, or the stout figures which are hewn out
in a rude manner with an ax on the posts at the end of bridges. They
are certainly in the shape of men, however uncouth, and are so hardy
that they neither require fire nor well flavored food, but live on the
roots of such herbs as they get in the fields, or on the half-raw flesh
of any animal, which they merely warm rapidly by placing it between
their own thighs and the backs of their horses. They never shelter
themselves under roofed houses, but avoid them, as people ordinarily
avoid sepulchers as things not fit for common use. Nor is there even to
be found among them a cabin thatched with reeds; but they wander about,
roaming over the mountains and the woods, and accustom themselves to
bear frost and hunger and thirst from their very cradles....There is
not a person in the whole nation who cannot remain on his horse day and
night. On horseback they buy and sell, they take their meat and drink,
and there they recline on the narrow neck of their steed, and yield to
sleep so deep as to indulge in every variety of dream.

4:15
And it came to pass that in the three hundred and sixty and seventh
year, the Nephites being angry because the Lamanites had sacrificed
their women and their children, that they did go against the Lamanites
with exceedingly great anger, insomuch that they did beat again the
Lamanites, and drive them out of their lands.

This is not in line with the ongoing thinking that the Huns struck
Europe as lightening, and whipped the Gothian Empire out as once.

4:16
And the Lamanites did not come again against the Nephites until the
three hundred and seventy and fifth year.

This is the supposed year of the Hun battle and the decline of
Ostro-Gothia and the dead of Ermanarich.

4:17
And in this year they did come down against the Nephites with all their
powers; and they were not numbered because of the greatness of their
number.

Hun hordes

4:18
And from this time forth did the Nephites gain no power over the
Lamanites, but began to be swept off by them even as a dew before the
sun.

That's what they say about the Goth defeat by the Huns

4:19
And it came to pass that the Lamanites did come down against the city
Desolation; and there was an exceedingly sore battle fought in the land
Desolation, in the which they did beat the Nephites.

Again, there is no proof of a Hun taking of Kiev.

4:20
And they fled again from before them, and they came to the city Boaz;
and there they did stand against the Lamanites with exceeding boldness,
insomuch that the Lamanites did not beat them until they had come again
the second time.
Boaz could have bean the Bosporus city

4:21
And when they had come the second time, the Nephites were driven and
slaughtered with an exceedingly great slaughter; their women and their
children were again sacrificed unto idols.

The pagan Hun worshipped animism.

4:22
And it came to pass that the Nephites did again flee from before them,
taking all the inhabitants with them, both in towns and villages.

The Goths were famous for their horse wagons with roofing and the river
crossings of the Goths.
Before the Huns into Roman territory are historical well described and
plenty.

Amminianus Marcellinus:
Full of this hope, he sent forth several officers to bring this
ferocious people and their carts into our territory. And such great
pains were taken to gratify this nation which was destined to overthrow
the Empire of Rome, that not one was left behind, not even of those who
were stricken with mortal disease. Moreover, so soon as they had
obtained permission of the emperor to cross the Danube and to cultivate
some districts in Thrace, they poured across the stream day and night,
without ceasing, embarking in troops on board ships and rafts and on
canoes made of the hollow trunks of trees....
(end quote)

Than follows the description of the final battle of the Nephites, in
which the Nephites as a people and as a culture are destructed and
Mormon dies.

6:2 And I, Mormon, wrote an epistle unto the king of the Lamanites, and
desired of him that he would grant unto us that we might gather
together our people unto the land of Cumorah, by a hill which was
called Cumorah, and there we could give them battle. There are no
records of the Hun battle between or the correspondence Ermanarich the
Ostrogoth king of Russia and the Hun commander Balamér but we have a
report of the same Amminius Marcelinius about the last stand of the
pagan Visi-Goth king Athanarico.

6:3 And it came to pass that the king of the Lamanites did grant unto
me the thing which I desired.
6:4 And it came to pass that we did march forth to the land of Cumorah,
and we did pitch our tents around about the hill Cumorah; and it was in
a land of many waters, rivers, and fountains; and here we had hope to
gain advantage over the Lamanites.
Cumorah could mean cumulus mora (black hills) the same name as
Petroassa (Ashrocks) were the Ostrogoth treasures were found around
1830. Camping on hills surrounded by water and streams was a typical
Roman strategy introduced to the Goths by Roman officers, who helped
the Goths against the Huns.

6:5 And when three hundred and eighty and four years had passed away,
we had gathered in all the remainder of our people unto the land of
Cumorah.
6:6 And it came to pass that when we had gathered in all our people in
one to the land of Cumorah, behold I, Mormon, began to be old; and
knowing it to be the last struggle of my people, and having been
commanded of the Lord that I should not suffer the records which had
been handed down by our fathers, which were sacred, to fall into the
hands of the Lamanites, (for the Lamanites would destroy them)
therefore I made this record out of the plates of Nephi, and hid up in
the hill Cumorah all the records which had been entrusted to me by the
hand of the Lord, save it were these few plates which I gave unto my
son Moroni.

6:7 And it came to pass that my people, with their wives and their
children, did now behold the armies of the Lamanites marching towards
them; and with that awful fear of death which fills the breasts of all
the wicked, did they await to receive them.
6:8 And it came to pass that they came to battle against us, and every
soul was filled with terror because of the greatness of their numbers.
6:9 And it came to pass that they did fall upon my people with the
sword, and with the bow, and with the arrow, and with the ax, and with
all manner of weapons of war.
6:10 And it came to pass that my men were hewn down, yea, even my ten
thousand who were with me, and I fell wounded in the midst; and they
passed by me that they did not put an end to my life.
6:11 And when they had gone through and hewn down all my people save it
were twenty and four of us, (among whom was my son Moroni) and we
having survived the dead of our people, did behold on the morrow, when
the Lamanites had returned unto their camps, from the top of the hill
Cumorah, the ten thousand of my people who were hewn down, being led in
the front by me.
6:12 And we also beheld the ten thousand of my people who were led by
my son Moroni. This decimal division of armies as well was a typical
Roman strategy, learned by their historical Roman officers to the
Goths
6:13 And behold, the ten thousand of Gidgiddonah had fallen, and he
also in the midst.
6:14 And Lamah had fallen with his ten thousand; and Gilgal had fallen
with his ten thousand; and Limhah had fallen with his ten thousand; and
Jeneum had fallen with his ten thousand; and Cumenihah, and Moronihah,
and Antionum, and Shiblom, and Shem, and Josh, had fallen with their
ten thousand each.
6:15 And it came to pass that there were ten more who did fall by the
sword, with their ten thousand each; yea, even all my people, save it
were those twenty and four who were with me, and also a few who had
escaped into the south countries, and a few who had deserted over unto
the Lamanites, had fallen; and their flesh, and bones, and blood lay
upon the face of the earth, being left by the hands of those who slew
them to molder upon the land, and to crumble and to return to their
mother earth.

6:22 O that ye had repented before this great destruction had come upon
you. But behold, ye are gone, and the Father, yea, the Eternal
Father of heaven, knoweth your state; and he doeth with you according
to his justice and mercy.

It is interesting that the verses of the Book Mormon in the BoM follows
more or less the timeline of the Huns and the Gadianton robbers appear
to be the Western Huns or Hsiang-nu.

Also the presence of Roman war tactics under the Nephites, like the
decimal division of their armies, chosen praetors [an elected Roman
Magistrate] and camps on hills alongside streams is historical as the
Romans did sent experienced officers to assist the Goths against the
Huns.

The injury of the aged Mormon at the battlefield in 385 in front of his
troops fits much better to the warmonger Ermanarich than the Historic
fables, who have him commit suicide in fear of the Huns or like in the
other version that he was stalked in his back by the Rosemont brothers.

Shortly after he writes to his son Moroni in Moroni 9:1 that he was
still alive, and he stayed alive, till he returned to the dust in 321
CE, 110 years old like Ermanarich, the real Mormon.

Who still doubts whether the drunkard, womanizer, brute Jörmun from
the
Eddah sages was the same man as the faithful Mormon,
who appealed against the baptizing of children could find comfort in by
historian Cassiodoro who said that Ermanarich, was stabbed in his back
bu the Rosemond brothers and has died with verses of the bible on his
lips.

As Moroni became a church servant, it is even possible, that
Ermanarich hid and died in a convent.

The real Mormon was no doubt the legendary Jörmun-rkkr, the historical
Ostro-Goth king Ermanaric.

Next we will explore history to see who could be Moroni, in life, after
dead and in history.
