Officially
summer is here! Hopefully you will be able to fit in a
little time to do some basket weaving this summer.
Since the cost of everything is going up, unfortunately the cost of our classes will have to go up as well. Effective July 1, 2012, a 3 hour class will be $18 plus materials. The shop will be closed for summer vacation starting June 30 through July 8. Regular classes will resume July 10. Also, for the months of July and August, the regular class on Tuesday mornings will have the summer hours of 10am-1pm.

e in order for Nancy Simpson, who
weaves the miniature baskets that are on display in the
shop. Nancy has recently been elevated to Fellow status,
the highest
honor of the International Guild of Miniature Artisans. She
submitted five baskets to be evaluated by the IGMA selection committee, who examined them for
concept, workmanship and presentation. They determined that
her baskets meet the criteria and she is one of four artists selected to receive the
honor for 2012. Nancy weaves Nantucket and Shaker style
baskets. She submitted a Nantucket purse with scrimshaw lid, a tray
that is woven with double cane and has scrimshaw inset in
the base that was carved by a friend. There is a beautiful
set of five nested Nantucket baskets. She also sent in two
Shaker style baskets, a cheese tub and a cathead basket. It
has been a lot of fun
and very inspirational to watch Nancy decide which baskets
she would submit and get them to the level of excellence
required for submission. Nancy is kind enough to leave the baskets at the shop if you
want to stop in and take a look. They are pretty
impressive!
Keep The Basket Sampler in mind if you have a group of friends or kids who may want to weave a basket. We can arrange a group class to fit your schedule. There are lots of examples of baskets to choose from on the website. Give Kathy a call to set up a class.
