WINTER WEAVING AT THE BASKET SAMPLER

This has been a challenging winter so far.  Hopefully spring won't be too far away.  I sure am ready for green trees and  flowers.

The shop has been busy the last few weeks.  We have had many 4H kids come in to weave their first baskets, and many returning kids also came in to choose what they want to do for the 4H fair this year.  We have had some kids that are on their 4th or 5th year of basket weaving, and they have picked out some pretty challenging baskets to weave.  I am sure they will all look great and will have a wonderful display at the fair.  We have also had calls from several Brownie and Girl Scout troops that want to make a basket.  Along with the kids, I have had calls from several senior centers that would like us to come and teach baskets to their groups.  Let me know if you have any groups that may be interested in weaving something...either at the shop or at your location.

I attended my first official Association of Michigan Basketmakers board meeting yesterday.  The big event coming up will be the 2011 Convention.  It will be held in Lansing at the Causeway Bay hotel from October 12-16, 2011.  If you go to the AMB's Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/pages/Association-of-Michigan-Basketmakers/109972675730101  you can see pictures of the baskets that were sent in to be juried.  I don't know which baskets were chosen, but they are pretty exciting to look at.  It's not too late to register with the AMB  http://www.michiganbasketmakers.com/MEMBERSHIP%20FORM.pdf and be one of the first to receive your convention book.  Even though you may not be able to attend the convention, you may be able to go for the day and see the Exhibit room and do some shopping, since it will be held in Lansing.

One of my favorite materials to work with is Black Ash.  There is a really great slide show on JoAnn Kelly Catsos' website http://joannkellycatsos.com/slideshow2.html that shows how the material is harvested and made into the wonderful material that we weave with.  There is a lot of hard work that goes into preparing the ash, but it is worth it to get a material that is such fun to work with.  If you have never woven with ash, come in to the store and we can show you how it's done.

Don't forget that Easter is coming up on April 24.  I will need to make another Easter basket for a new grandson who is due in March.  Anyone that comes in between now and Easter to weave an Easter basket will receive 10% off materials for their basket.

As many of you know, I have had back trouble this past year.  I am going to have surgery this week and for the next three to four weeks will not be able to drive, so the store will be open when I can get there.  Regular classes on Tuesdays with Helen will go on as scheduled (9:30am-12:30pm and 6pm-9pm).  The store will be closed on February 18, but should be open as usual on Fridays for the next few weeks.  If you are coming in, can you please call ahead at 248-889-8600.  If there is no answer, someone will get back to you and let you know when we will be in.  You can also email to ka...@thebasketsampler.com and I will let you know when I can be there.  Hopefully everything will be back to normal by March 15.
