I recently inspected the reverb tank in my Bandmaster Reverb, thinking
it was maybe time to replace it, but everything looked pristine. So i
decided to stick with it. removed a bit of dust from here and there,
made sure all the contacts were looking good, and also added a piece
of corrugated cardboard to to cover the open top before I re-bagged it
and hung it back up. Verified that the input/output cables are hooked
up properly, and that the output end is on the opposite side of the
power transformer.

For a couple weeks, it was sounding great, better than ever, then I
started having problems with my the RCA connector on my footswitch
(see earlier thread), the reverb was cutting in and out, I had to
wiggle the connector around and get it just right to engage the
reverb. When I did find that magic position, it still sounded great. I
ended up ordering a replacement footswitch with sturdier RCA plugs to
avoid the hassle. I ordered this piece: http://www.amplifiedparts.com/products/amp_parts/P-H271-A

I plugged it in yesterday and the results were terrible. The vibe side
worked perfectly, but the reverb was another story. For about 2
seconds it sounded good, then the reverb quit and all I got was a
really crunchy broken up sound with that switch engaged. Also, when
the reverb knob was turned up past 8 or so, I got intense high-pitched
feedback. Possible that the cable is not properly wired w/ the correct
ground for the reverb side?

Before I send the footswitch back and start over from square 1, I'm
trying to figure out if there's a chance the problem is with the tank,
or maybe the 12AT7 needs to be replaced, or maybe the female jacks
themselves have gone bad? Any diagnostic tricks I can try?

thanks again,

Adam

Does it still sound great with your old footswitch in the "magic
position"? If you can get it to sound right with the old footswitch
then I'd guess that there is nothing wrong with the amp. If this is
the case then you may just need to replace the RCA plug on your old
footswitch.

unfortunately, I can no longer find that magic position with the old
switch. I may end up taking the old switch into my shop and trying it
out on one of their amps.

  # 1/ IT COULD be the female rca jack on the back panel of the amp ,, sometimes they need to be cleaned , they get dirty from cig smoke and other things or just need to re-adjust the crimp inside the jack itself for a better connection , check the ground shield around the cable at both ends for a solid connection // # 2 dirty tube sockets or the pin connector soldering inside the amp will cause a "howl " deemed as feedback most the time  # 3 yes a bad tube also ,   JRSMIR.COM

Do you now get the exact same sound/behaviour with both footswitches?

Nope, Fred. The old footswitch just had a connection issue. On the
rare occasion I was able to get it just right, it sounded great. The
new one was horrible w/ the squealing and popping no matter what.

I took it into Willie's in St Paul on Friday and tested it out on a 68
Super Reverb, same problems. So it's a faulty footswitch. Emailed the
people at Amplified Parts and waiting to hear back from them. Maybe
it's just a faulty part I'm dealing with -- their website clearly
lists this switch as a replacement for any vintage Fender ams w/
switchable reverb/treb

well, they agreed to send a replacement at no charge, so we'll see if
the new one is any better. will report back in a week or so i guess.

An update: They replaced the switch and I had the same problems. I
brought my original into Wilies' in St Paul and their amp whisperer
repaired it to fortify the plugs. Imagine my mood when I plugged it
into my amp today with the same results. So must be a problem with my
amp.

What are the steps I should try in order to address this problem. It's
squealing feedback whenever i turn the reverb on.

thanks!

I'm supposed to get the amp back tomorrow. I had a friend who is a
tech look at it; said the reverb tank was an incorrect unit and the
power tubes were also about 10 years old and out of bias. according to
him it sounds great now, I guess we'll see.
