I made a split on February 21st from some hives in Contra Costa County and brought the whole split back to San Leandro with all of the foragers that were put in the box right away. So it had  a good population of bees in the box and did not lose any flying bees. The split did not have a queen. She stayed with the mother hive because I was in a rush and didn't have time to look for her. (Verified by no eggs in the nuc and week after the split).

Today they swarmed, sigh. I was hoping that they would be in "emergency queen" mode due to the queenless period, but the retention of the foragers must have kept them in "let's swarm our faces off!" mode. I went in to check for more queens and was able to harvest some virgins for other splits that we're still in the process of requeening.

Here's a fun video of sister Queens battling it out.

That’s happened to me before, too! Seemed like a good plan at the time…

Great video! Did I see workers also protecting an unhatched queen cell from that virgin queen?

That's pretty cool, Paula. Thank you for sharing with us. I wonder how many stings a virgin can take before they succumb.

Yeah, she is down on the lower third of the screen, you can see her vibrating to make the piping sound. So cool. Never gets old.

I was just cleaning up my Google photos and watching this video again.

If you slow down the playback speed as much as possible, take a look from 42 to 45 seconds. What is happening here? It almost looks like one queen pooped on the other one, which is, frankly, pretty rude, even in a fight to the death! What else could I be seeing here?
