I haven't been on the board in a while. Has there been any discussion on this new, genetic varroa mite treatment?

Thanks

This is a new product to control mite growth. It is an RNA that female mite can't lay eggs. It doesn't kill mites. Before installing Norroa you have to make sure mite count should be very low like less than 1%. One treatment is good for about 18 weeks.
The other thing is the cost. Each treatment cost over $22.

This is a short video i had interviewed the maker's representative at the Honeybee Expo back in January in Louisville Kentucky.

I think most people probably don't have enough experience with it yet. I bought one pack of it (treatment for two hives) to see what it was like, and it seems "fine", with low mite counts... but that's also true of some of my hives with just oxalic acid towels, so I don't really have enough data to report anything useful.

Carl,

The product is new, and like Sung and Robert said, there has been no discussion or results from club members yet that I am aware of.   This spring I put Norroa on three hives that I am responsible for.  Since the company says the treatment lasts up to 18 weeks, there won't be any results until this fall.  Before treating, I made sure the mite counts in my hives were around 1% as the manufacturer recommends.  I am hopeful it will work as advertised.

The scientific principle behind this product (RNA silencing) is theoretically sound and has been explored for pest control in a number of crops.   In theory, this approach has the advantage of high specificity to the target pest.  The company that developed the product, Greenlight Biosciences, has looked at adverse effects in honey bees and a number of other insects, including wax moth, where there is DNA/RNA sequence data available and have not found any off-target effects.  If you search for Norroa or Greenlight Biosciences you can find the publications that are in the public domain.  I was a DNA/RNA biochemist during my professional career and would be willing to go down this rabbit hole in more detail if you are interested.  I won't bore the rest of the group with the details.

Bob
