The Oakland Zoo has fully aged and certified compost available for free to the community.  It is derived from food scraps from their food service canteens as well as herbivore manure.  They are happy to give you as little or as much as you can take.  If you bring a trash can, you can load it yourself.  If you have a pickup, they will load it for you (as long as an employee is available to run their bobcat).  Just drive to the main gate and stop at the guard booth.  Tell the guard on duty you want to get some compost.  The guard will then give you directions.  I have found there is usually someone in the yard M-F between 9-noon to assist.  Though, in theory early afternoon should also work.  The yard is locked on the weekends. They have a never ending supply, so they are motivated to provide compost as a community service.

I can say, after seeing it today, it looks like good stuff.   Nice and fluffy, black, and well composted.  The garden will be better for it.

Cheers, Phil

Thanks Bob - only wish Oakland Zoo was closer to my house.

Pleasanton periodically has some on Laguna Creek lane.

Thanks
