Hello ACBA members,

I’m reaching out as a member of the Alameda County Beekeepers Association — and as someone who first got started with bees here in Berkeley.

My new book, Bitter Honey: Big Ag’s Threat to Bees and the Fight to Save Them, publishes this month (May 26), and I have an upcoming event at Mrs. Dalloway’s Bookstore in Berkeley on May 28th at 7pm that I thought might interest members of the association.

Bitter Honey explores the pressures facing bees and beekeepers today — including Varroa mites, pesticide exposure, forage loss, almond pollination, honey economics, and the broader agricultural system that shapes so much of modern commercial beekeeping.

The Berkeley event is:

Mrs. Dalloway’s Bookstore
Thursday, May 28, 7:00–8:30 p.m.
Berkeley, CA
In conversation with novelist Mary Volmer
RSVP/details: https://mrsdalloways.com/event/2026-05-28/jennie-durants-bitter-honey-0

I’ll also be speaking that weekend in Marin:

Book Passage Bookstore & Cafe
Saturday, May 30, 4:00 p.m.
Corte Madera, CA
In conversation with beekeeper and author Novella Carpenter
Details: https://www.bookpassage.com/event/jennie-durant-bitter-honey

I’d be grateful if you’d consider sharing one or both events with your members, or including them in an upcoming newsletter or announcement. I’m attaching the flyers here as well.

Thanks so much!

Hi Jennie,

Congratulations on your new book!

I was curious if it was focused solely on honeybees or also is about the larger native bee populations, which are also under pressures (including competition for resources from honeybees).

Thanks!

Hi Andrew!

Thank you! The first few chapters are mostly about honey bees, but the book definitely discusses native bees throughout, esp. in the second half of the book—including a discussion about resource competition.

Thanks for asking!

Jennie
