The Native Irish Honey Bee Sanctuary on Inishturk Island is dedicated to protecting Ireland’s original honey bee, Apis mellifera mellifera. These bees first arrived in Ireland thousands of years before humans, shortly after the Ice Age, naturally colonising the island and evolving traits perfectly suited to our cool, wet Atlantic climate.

Situated 15 km off the Mayo coastline, Inishturk is a remote island of fewer than 60 residents, shaped by cliffs, heather-covered hills, and unspoiled wildflower landscapes. Its natural isolation makes it one of the few places in Ireland capable of supporting a pure, varroa-free native bee population.

It does sound very much like the Bee from Ouessant an island almost constantly batter by wind . Much larger than any other bee with a foraging range of 10K v/s 2.5 k for anyother bee , it has a different DNA. Than other bees according to research from the French institute CNRS ( centre national de Recherche scientifiqueb)side note French Perfume maker Guerlain was and still is a fervent supporter of saving the specie and even have some of the honey incorporated in one of their perfume line , the bee aside of strong protection by the French Gov. is being ysed to repopulate mainland bee population , it is also one of the very rare insect registered by the UNESCO .
The world of bee will never cease to amaze us .

I would think that other areas with harsh weather would want to acquire breeding stock. I wonder if this is happening.

Good thought ! However getting them thru tbe USDA is near impossible but for scientific reason  and yet very strict .
I did inquire several years aho for a friend in the Pacific north , everyone and with reason is afffected by the Africanized bee syndrome.
Incidentally while very peaceful in the island ,i understand dsome can be a bit testy on the mainland , but they are moving full speed ahead to replace the italians , need to revive my contact and find out .
