Tuesday, February 18 @ 7:30 PM 9:00 PM

Add the event to your calendar!

Our speaker will be Dr. Daniel Swain, Climate Scientist at the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability. He’ll speak about climate change in California:

“California is a land of great geographic and climatological diversity, and no stranger to drought, flood, and fire. The region already has one of the highest degrees of precipitation variability in the world, and is notably susceptible to extremes at both ends of the hydroclimate spectrum. California’s cities and water infrastructure are designed with this relatively high variability explicitly in mind, and have historically been able to accommodate most of these natural swings from wet to dry (and back again) reasonably well. Yet in a warming climate, California is beginning to experience an even greater degree of “hydroclimate whiplash” that will eventually bring both droughts and floods that are outside the bounds of historical experience and will seriously threaten the state’s ability to manage these hazards. In this talk, I’ll outline what we know with high certainty about California’s changing climate, discuss some of the more speculative and uncertain aspects, and conclude with thoughts on what adaptations would be commensurate with the changes ahead.”

About Daniel Swain

Dr. Daniel Swain is a climate scientist focused on the dynamics and impacts of extreme events—including droughts, floods, storms, and wildfires—on a warming planet. Daniel holds joint appointments as a climate scientist with the University of California and a research fellow at the NSF National Center for Atmospheric Research. He engages extensively with journalists and other media partners, serving as a climate and weather science liaison to print, television, radio, and web-based outlets to facilitate accessible and accurate coverage and conversations surrounding climate change. Daniel is an alumnus of the University of California, Davis (B.S., Atmospheric Science) and of Stanford University (Ph.D., Earth System Science), and completed his postdoctoral work at UCLA. He also authors the widely-read Weather West blog (weatherwest.com), which provides real-time perspectives on California weather and climate, and can be found on Twitter (@Weather_West) and YouTube (@WeatherWest).

Thanks very much Gerry.  I pay too much attention to climate change, so can tell you Swain is a hugely respected climate scientist, especially re CA climate change.

This will be via zoom?

Would it be helpful to have the zoom link included each time a zoom program is advertised?

While it's always a good idea to include time / location / link details when sending out reminders, I should perhaps again mention that the details of upcoming events are always prominently listed on the home page of the club website at www.alamedabees.org.

Right now, for example, it looks like this:

So if you ever need the link to join a Zoom presentation, just visit the website and click where it says "Zoom presentation: click to join meeting".

As Rob pointed out, the info is available in the obvious places.
The zoom link is also published in the ACBA newsletter you received about a week and a half ago.
The archive of newsletters is available on the member's tab of the website, but you'll need to use the password,
which is in the newsletter, or was in the "Greeting" email you received if you joined ACBA for the first time.

Just today one of our future speakers cautioned against publishing the zoom URL or turning off "waiting-room"
for fear that the meeting could be Zoom-bombed.  That Was a thing that we hope has faded with covid.

so I think we have a reasonable balance with respect to availability of the URL.

Since we use the same zoom URL, you can just save it in a "Note" on your computer, or in your pad, or phone.
You can set up a repeating reminder in your "Calendar" app, complete with reminder.

Cheers,
Jerry

PS.  We welcome guests from other bee clubs at the zooms, so don't be stingy.  Share.  Sometimes those guests join. :-)
After all, dues are $10 Cheap!   One really great meeting or zoom can be worth more than that $10.

PPS:  If you didn't renew yet with the ACBA, do before March 31 to maintain continuity.
Renewing is especially important for uninterrupted swarm-list access.

If you do this, your calendar will automatically update every time a new event is added, like magic.
