Hi everyone!

I’m pleased to announce that the club now has an apiary at the Hayward Community Gardens, near Cal State. We’re starting very small and low-key, but we have bees! And you can come by and visit this Sunday morning if you want to check it out.

Why a club apiary? The idea is to have a few hives in a neutral space, with scheduled inspections that any member or potential member can participate in. Less-experienced club members can learn hands-on techniques from more experienced members, and people who are considering taking up beekeeping can see what beekeeping is like. There’s more info on the website page about the apiary.

What’s happening with it? Well, we’ve made a start! We’ve got a hive stand (donated by Phil Stob — thanks!) and some docile bees (donated by Sung Lee — thanks!). Here’s a picture of what's there now:

We’ll get a proper signup system going soon, but as a first step, Phil, Sung and I will be there this Sunday (July 30) from 10:30 to noon. We’ll be doing an inspection starting around 11:00, and spreading around some mulch, and I hope other people will join us. If you intend to come, please mention it as a reply to this message. You can find directions on the page.

We also need donations. If you have any of these things in good condition, and you're willing to donate them, please let me know (we can arrange a pickup if you don’t want to come by):

  • Two more hive bodies (bottom board, deep boxes, inner cover and outer cover, or any parts of those you have)
  • Honey super boxes
  • Bee jackets, veils and gloves for visitors who don’t have their own
  • A decent smoker
  • Metal fireproof box for smoker
  • Varroa test kits
  • Hive tools
  • A frame holder
  • A bee brush
  • Robbing screens
  • Brand new frames with wax foundation (Sung is generously donating the bees but would like frames back in exchange)

Finally, we're looking for volunteers who are willing to occasionally lead hive inspections on a weekend. The goal is to have the hives inspected every couple of weeks, with some or all of those inspections being open to others. Ideally, we'll have 4-6 volunteers in a rotation who will agree to do it once every two or three months.

Thanks!

-- Rob

This is so awesome!
I'll be there.

I'll donate a full hive with bees, a couple hive tools, a few robber screens and a frame hanger.

See you there.

I won't be able to bee at the site on Sunday,  but can put together a couple sugar roll mite test kits.

Unfortunately I’m not available this Sunday. Most Sunday mornings I’m busy. But I’d be happy to help on other days and with beekeeping at the site.

Thanks Leslie!

Future meetings won't always be on Sundays; that was just when several
people were available this weekend. A variety of different days will be
better because it will give more people the opportunity to attend.

Once we get things a little more settled down, we can work on a proper
schedule, etc.

I have a nice slab of wood that would do well as a bench, if anyone has a some spare cement blocks to contribute.  (about 4 would do)
See you there this morning.

Cheers, Phil

Hi Phil,

Would 4 x regular cement blocks like this one work for the bench? I can get those.
