First of all, wasps, yellowjackets, bald faced hornets, mud daubers
are all natives,
and have their place in the ecosystem.
The most despised of those seems to be yellowjackets.
When they live in ground-nests and NEED to be dealt with, Vector
Control (a county service
we pay taxes for) is the # 1 call.
Foraging yellowjackets can be "trapped" by commercial traps, or by
do-it-yourself traps.
For DIY traps, the basics are that a bait (rotting meat) lure hangs
a half an inch
above a tray of water with detergent in it.
The YJs dip down as they fly away from their food source, and drop
into the soapy
water where they die. The detergent reduces the surface tension of
the the water,
so they can't stay on top of it, and it kills them.
A small trap can be made from a gallon milk jug with some holes cut
in the sides.
A high-capacity trap can be made with a board laid across a large
tray or baking pan. aps on the sides
The "bait" is attached to the board, and the board placed
bait-side-down above the soapy water.
