Hi Robin,

Thank you so much for the informative, fascinating and entertaining session at the Apiary today!Ā  I'm still buz-z-z-zing from the experience.

I'm the guy who kept bees for about 10 years, but had to give it up a couple of years ago when the boxes became too heavy for me to schlep around, plus I had a bad reaction one time when I got stung through my canvas gloves about 20 times.Ā  but I loved my bees and miss them, so I've remained a member of the ACBA and on its email list and follow bee events avidly.

Thanks again.Ā  If I still had bees, I would certainly try the protection-less approach.Ā  You made it seem logical and easy.

Best regards,

Mike Sherwood

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
You don't have to have hives to hang out with beekeepers and go to events.
You haven't lost your knowledge.Ā  You may want to staff the booth at the fair this year. It's a blast.
Thanks for your enthusiasm, and feedback.
I hope to see you often.Ā

Hi Mike,
Just a thought...Ā
If you're not up to doing the beekeeping work any more, but like to have bees in the yard,
consider being a host of a couple of hives.Ā Ā
If you get someone experienced, you don't have to do anything.Ā
If you get someone new to beekeeping you can do some mentoring.Ā
It's a common arrangement to split the honey production with the host.Ā  often up to half.Ā
Typically the guest owns the gear and bees, and does the work.Ā
There are a few members of the club who are apartment dwellers who can't keep bees on the roof.Ā

Mike, I have both problems too. I now have a long Lang to eliminate lifting, and I get allergy shots which are very effective. If you want to keep bees, perhaps you can find a way.Ā

Good idea Jerry.
Mike, I know a gal in Oakland who wants to place a couple hives at a host location.Ā  Let me know if that's something you desire.

Thank you to Robin for the very informative hive dive at the club apiary yesterday. Walter and I may not be ready to forgo protective gear, but we at least learned to move ā€œlike a treeā€. The tips on learning how to find the queen were great. It’s way better looking for Her Majesty in an actual hive than reading about it online! Thank you very much, Robin, for a fun and educational outing!

By the way, after Robin's excellent presentation, Sung took a look in another hive to check the mite count.

The count was around 17 mites per 300 bees, which is quite a lot, but what was also interesting is that when he accidentally broke some drone brood cells open, you could easily see the mites in it.Ā Take a look at this videoĀ if you want your skin to crawl! You'll first see three mites, but then look closer... and there's easily six or seven more.

Scraping off and killing just these three drone cells would prevent almost a dozen mites from hatching. That shows why removing drone brood from your hive before it hatches can be an effective part of mite control.Ā Honey Bee Suite has more about this.

Ugh, my mail program messed up the link. Sorry. Here's the skin-crawling link:
