My small hive of only one deep revealed lots of comb at the bottom of each frame!
The bottom board is ventilated. Should I assume that these bees, in particular,
do not like the bottom ventilation? Why else would they build all this comb
along the bottom of each deep frame?

This hive box is in the same location as previous colonies, none of whom built
such weird comb! Location: eastern end of Chabot Road in Rockridge, Oakland.

Have you noticed those are all drone cell combs?

If bees have any space at all between the bottom of the frame and the screen bottom board or a solid wood bottom board they will put drone brood there. It's not an uncommon thing to happen.
