What the heck is Web 2.0?

Did the Internet get an upgrade? Is there something I need download to make sure I have the latest version? I was happy with the old web what happened and when did it change and why wasn't I told.

Is this some kind of conspiracy?

Yes the term Web 2.0 sounds like a new version of software but it is simply just a new buzz phrase for the evolution of the Internet. It did not happen over night. There were no downloads. No upgrades. Somebody somewhere in some marketing firm one day decided to create the phrase to describe the new verve of the net and it caught on.

So what does Web 2.0 actually allude to?
