Winter 2011 Class Schedule
January 7 – March 11
FIQH
Utilizing the Arabic text of Abu Muhammad ‘Abdullah ibn Abi Zayd al-Qayrawani’s ar-Risalah, penned in the 3rd century AH, this course offers the student a basic overview of Islamic Jurisprudence as formulated by the school founded by Imam Malik. According to its author, his Risalah was composed to address: “what is obligatory in the dîn – those things which should be pronounced by the tongue and believed by the heart and done by the limbs…sunnahs which are associated with these obligatory actions – the confirmed (mu’akkadah), the optional (nafilah) and the desirable (raghibah)…the courtesies (adab) associated with them; along with certain key principles and derived judgments in jurisprudence (fiqh)…”
Introductory Fiqh: Mondays 6:30 - 7:45 PM
This course will start the student from a rudimentary explanation of the `aqidah or creed of the people of the sunnah, and will go on to cover ritual purity, prayer, fasting, zakat, hajj, and the law of slaughter and ritual sacrifice, all in great detail. All classes will be conducted using the Arabic text, which will be translated in class. Knowledge of the Arabic language is not a requirement to benefit from the class as all texts will be translated as they are taught, however, there is much benefit for students who can read and understand Arabic.
Advanced Fiqh: Thursdays 6:30 - 7:45PM
This course will cover advanced topics such as marriage, divorce, business transactions, criminal law, the Islamic court, witnessing, inheritance and various customs of the sunnah. Knowledge of the Arabic language is not a requirement to benefit from the class as all texts will be translated as they are taught however there is much benefit for students who can read and understand Arabic. This course is ideal for the student who has mastered the material from the introductory course, however, if a student who has not previously taken or mastered the introductory course wishes to take the advanced course, they may do so, granted that they concurrently take the introductory course.
HADITH
Riyadh al-Salihin: Fridays 7:45-9:00PM
A guide for the traveler on the way of Muhammad
messenger of Allah. This class will feature a scholarly translation and
commentary on Imam Nawawi’s hadith collection Riyādh al-Sālihīn, an
authoritative guide for all who wish to live in conformance to the prophetic
prescription to “Be in this World as if a Stranger, or A Traveler Down a Path.”
ARABIC
Anyone interested in starting an Arabic class is encouraged to contact in...@thawr.org. If enough people generate interest, as in the past, it is quite possible to start up an Arabic language class, as well as a class on grammar and morphology.
Qur’an/Tajwid
Anyone interested in learning and refining their tajwid or memorizing Qur’an is encouraged to contact in...@thawr.org in order to set up a time for lessons.
