Assalamu'alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu
For anyone who is interested in a thorough scholarly discussion on the issue of whether or not the Friday prayer is obligatory for those who have prayed the `Id prayer, please see the attached translation of the relevant tract from Iam Ibn Rushd al-Hafid al-Qurtubi's masterpiece on the
fiqh of the four
madhhabs,
Bidayat al-Mujtahid.
The purpose of sending this article out is not to quash a difference of opinion, rather to clarify that the positions of the Hanafi, Maliki, and Shafi'i schools as well as the preponderant position amongst the people of the
sunnah from both a rational and a traditional point of view is that the Friday prayer is obligatory even when `Id falls on a Friday and one has prayer the `Id prayer. If one still maintains their personal opinion that it is not obligatory, that opinion, despite being a minority opinion, is still valid and we respect that. However, it is our recommendation that the mosques be open for Friday prayers, and that even people who believe the Friday prayer not to be obligatory on `Id come to the mosque for the Friday prayer anyways out of caution and
taqwa.
Verily
taqwa never entered into a heart or deed except it made it beautiful.
