so all files are nominal i uninstalled q mod as I'm not currently using legacy version everything's fine but when i press play it doesn't actually run subnautica for some reason for no apprent reason it says everything but but won't boot up the game
A legacy version is an old stable release that is still available (and probably supported) because someone might need it (e.g. plugin dependencies that don't work with the newest release), whereas the stable version is the most recent stable release (which will eventually become a legacy version).
Developer Unknown Worlds' superb underwater survival adventure Subnautica has just received its first major update in two years, bringing with it new building bits, performance enhancements, accessibility features, quality of life improvements, and over 800 bug fixes.
Unknown Worlds' latest update - officially titled Living Large, or 2.0 to its friends - is described as a "labour of love for the entire Subnautica team", and aims to address "a tonne of tech debt and [bring] across some improved code from Below Zero."
To that end, Living Large moves Subnautica and its follow-up Below Zero onto unified versions of Unity, enabling the developer to implement quality of life features, fix bugs, and performance improvements in Subnautica that were already available in the more recent game.
These enhancements range from better subtitle syncing and save system improvements to pinned recipes and a host of new accessibility options. In the latter case, that includes UI scaling, PDA pause, and the option to disable light flashes.
Living Large is available now across all platforms - which is to say PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC - but Steam players who'd prefer not to upgrade (perhaps to avoid mod conflicts) can roll back to the 'legacy' version via the Properties > Beta menu.
"We really hope that all of these changes make your Subnautica experience even better than ever!," writes Unknown Worlds in its patch notes. "And as some eagle-eyed fans might have spotted, we might have some more exciting news for you in the new year."
That could well relate to the new Subnautica game announced as being in "early" development back in April. This is one of several confirmed projects currently in the works at Unknown Worlds, the other being intriguing miniatures battler Moonbreaker.
For those who have yet to dive into the world of Subnautica, or those looking to return to it, allow me to explain what this update brought to the game, what the state of the game is now, and whether you should play this game too, in this second look at this underwater adventure.
Perishable foods also contain a bar, this one showing how long they have until they become rotten. There is even a bar for how much use of a fire extinguisher you have left, too! Another feature brought over from Below Zero allows you to choose whether you want to have the game pause whenever you enter your PDA, the tool that allows you to manage your inventory or look up crafting recipes, rather than having things keep going on around you, which does include oxygen depletion if you are underwater. For those sensitive to flashing lights, an option to disable such lights has been added as well.
One final quality of life feature in the update I will mention is the ability to pin up to six crafting recipes on your HUD at a time. This is such a welcome feature, not only because it shows you how many of each item you have versus how many you need to craft an item, but it can also help you remember what you were planning on making next, if you take an extended break from the game.
As for overall performance, the game runs smoothly on my PC, and I have not encountered any stuttering. I have experienced mild pop in on some larger objects, but nothing too egregious to me. I did experience a piece of titanium clipping through the floor on my first limestone chunk I harvested, but I have not encountered that issue since. On extended play sessions, you may encounter some memory leak, which may lower your fps. One complaint I do have is that out of all the bugs fixed in the 2.0 update, a bug that causes music from different biomes to overlap each other has still not been fixed.
Subnautica is approaching its 10th birthday this year, (if you count its early access release date as its birthday) and since then, thousands of players have experienced the sights and frights of Planet 4546B. Unlike many developers, Unknown Worlds Entertainment took the time, money, and effort needed to help shape Subnautica into the underwater survival game people love to fear to this day. They could have easily taken the money and ran without ever finishing the game like other developers have done in the past. Instead, they not only finished the game and released it out of early access to widespread success and praise, they released a sequel and then updated the original to improve the quality of life for players of a soon to be decade-old game.
The developers also understood that some people would not want to update the game, which would break any mods they had installed, so they informed players on Steam that if they did not wish to update the game, for whatever reason, they could go to the Betas tab in Steam and download a legacy version of the game. None of this was necessary by Unknown Worlds, but it just goes to show how much both this game and the experience of the players mean to them.
Going into this new update we decided to do something big. Go back in time, roughly 7 years, and overhaul the base code of Nitrox to make it more future-proof. A backlog of 7 years of documentation needed to be improved, so we have been working on that for Nitrox.
The main culprit however was and always have been the Subnautica code itself. There is a complete lack of documentation on how the Subnautica code works. Meaning we for most parts have to take educated guesses as to what code does what. Having to guess what is deprecated code or what code is still in use is an extremely slow process as every tiny change must be tested manually. This is what is making the update take so long to do.
Now the big question is, what do these lines of code do exactly? Well, one of the major things we have been working on is squeezing as much performance out of it as possible. Making sure we use less bandwidth where possible while still improving the amount of data sent and making it more reliable.
One of the things we worked on to improve our bandwidth usage was the packet size. In the current version of Nitrox, the packet sizes are always 1kb big. Sure does not sound like a lot in the modern day of gigabit internet, but it does add up rather quickly. So we went through the code and optimized it, by how much do you ask? About 4000% improvement, the packets should now be in the ballpark of 15-25bytes when you get your hands on the new update.
Besides optimizing the code we have been working on quality-of-life improvements is one of them. You see, in the lifepods, there happens to only be one seat for whatever reason. Obviously, it is a design flaw by the Alterra Corporation. So we added another seat to them!
As you also might have noticed, is that you can also see the other player in your lifepod! There are now 2 seats per lifepod, meaning if you join the server at the same time you should be able to see another player. Our end goal with this is that when more players join, they spawn into different lifepods either alone or together. However, this is something that will be worked on at a later date. For now, the world will hopefully feel more alive and you are all finding out that you are not all alone.
As some of you might have noticed, the Crabsnakes seem a bit overfed, so we have given them a strict diet of no more than 1x Cyclops submarine per week. This will hopefully make sure that they are able to fit inside their mushroom houses again.
Some of the other things we have been improving on are syncing objects like the Gravity trap. The gravity trap should now be able to grab small objects like the fish and keep them there. If you log out, and back in again it should be there with all of the fish that it had trapped into its orbit.
If you liked having the posters around in your base, well now is your time to shine as we have worked on the code for them. They should now no longer fall through the floor but stay on the walls (obviously, just gave you better sticky tape!).
What we do not know, is how long is left before we can release the update in between work, social life and all the other things that happen. We will let you know as fast as possible when we have a more concrete time or at the very least an idea of when it will be ready.
Yeah the big packets where problem as I had very low upload speed 8 Mbps it was realy bad experience as after sometime the server stop working for only one player (from two) in meaning nothing was loading and out off sync.
Now I got more consistant 25 Mbps and this update could made my future experience better and finnaly finish this game with a friend!
Hope for the best and keep the great work up!!!
hi, I found a bug with energy from reactors, I was playing with a friend and installed a nuclear reactor and powered it up, but he did not get energy from the reactor, but when he installed the same reactor and activated it, he got energy, but I did not
