FOLK LORE!
A dictionary will show the meaning of ‘folk lore’ as traditions, beliefs popularly held; study of these. ‘Folk song and folk dance’ are music originating among a people; traditional dance among the people.
In fact folk lore and dance are there all over the world and they reflect the ancient culture, civilization, thinking at that part of the age, place etc. They have a lot of sense and are pregnant with meaning.
Unfortunately, in this fast changing world, rapidly moving society, in the fast food culture, in the advanced information technological times folk lore and dances are on the wane and the society may one day regret that we have failed to nurse and nourish the great art form.
One of the ancient languages Tamil has a great and glorious treasure house of ancient arts including folk lore and dances.
One of my good friends and a recognized poet from a rural part of Tamilnadu Poet Narana. Manivannan, retired teacher, author of a famous scientific epic in Tamil “பிரபஞ்சம் ஒரு தேரோட்டம்-“ dealing with the space science duly translated by me into English under the title “Universe – A chariot on the Move”- both the versions being serially published for more than a year in a Dalit Monthly Journal ”நீதிக்கான விடியல்”from Chennai has thought of creating a folk lore with the accent on the current century concern for women. It is indeed unfortunate that even today a woman is looked upon as an object of pleasure, and hardly finds safety and security in the society –whether in the rural or urban society.
Keeping this in mind, he has written a folklore in Tamil which has been translated by me in English. It is a sort of revolutionary advice to a teen aged rural girl/lady as how to take care of her safety and security.
In this Sunday Story- 9th in the series, I give below the original in Tamil and its translated version. In fact this Tamil version is being broadcast by Pondichery All India Radio shortly.
