As we're heading to Brasilia for the OGP meetings next week we'll kick in a Sunday afternoon of OpenStreetMap mapping work. We'll get a car (or more) and have some street name + point of interest collection fun. If you'd like to join us, let me know. I know a bunch of people on this list will be in Brasilia next week - I'm looking forward to meeting you in person there.

Here's a blog post with details:

Well,

I'll be in Brasília, but I'll try to meet you after you leave Taguatinga. I looked at the blog and I can use your email or twitter to find you. But at least I can say, some streets have no name, because the adresses are to the blocks, were people actually live or work. It's somewhat confusing at the beginning, but with a little guidance, you can find any place by yourself, even without a map.

Hi guys

Alex, where can we find any information about how can we use or
smartphones and GPS devices to help map the communities?

Tulio -

More than anything I am trying to figure out right now which streets or blocks have _signs_ and which ones don't. The fact that some streets have no names, but are organized by blocks shouldn't be a problem.

Any thoughts on this?

Pedro -

We'll be really busy from Monday to Wednesday, but I would really love to see whether we can do at least a small mapping party on Monday. When are you getting into town?

Here's a good starting point for working with a GPS device for OSM: http://www.learnosm.org/beginners-guide/chapter-4-using-the-gps/ (also available in Portuguese). Using a smartphone works very similar, it's usually a matter of picking a GPS tracking app that you like.

FWIW, in our experience the fastest way to map is to trace satellite imagery [1] (as far as available) and then use walking papers [2] to fill in local knowledge.

Let me know if you have more questions.

You said (I looked the blog) that you staart by Taguatinga and suroundings. There, in the residencial area, I'm pretty sure that almost every street should have names and signs, there are a logic pattern, if you wish to follow. For instance, the northern side (from central area to northern side), the blocks are called by CNA  1 (comercial north A + number) , CNA 2, after CNB, and so forth. The residencial area is next to it with streets QNA 1 (quadra north A + number) QNA 2 in line one to another, in other line, parallel, QNB, QNC.

This pattern is not parallel to all alphabet, but follows the same logic and in the entrance of each street you should be able to see signs with these names. I'm not quite experienced with Taguatinga adresses, but I can undestand the logic behind it. I know better Plano Piloto, what should be 'down town' compared to other cities.

Will get there sunday at night.

Maybe we can do it on monday morning? <E ai meu povo? Bora mapear brasilia? Quem topa?>

I've two usb gps sticks, and a bunch of gps-enabled cellphones which should do the trick :)

Zuardi, are you coming after all? Wanna help coordinate this with Alex?

So, I live in Brasilia. I'm almost sure I'll be available on Sunday ;)

As for the sings, there is also a pattern for signs, that do not match what is normal in ohter cities, since we do not have, for instance, "corners". The signs are mostly vertical, and are basicly displaced for drivers to see, not for pedestrians.

As for the technical issues, Alex, is a digital camera enough or do we need a GPS system working along? Also, as my mobile works with Android 1.5, I'm not sure it will function with most of the apps.

André,

Complementando a resposta do Alex, a lista de discussão do

Awesome, wee've got some GPS, just bring your camera. We'll be doing walking papers so you'll be able to map without any tech actually. See you tomorrow at 11.

anyone got a tracking app recommendation for android 1.5?

Pesso@all,

Algum indicativo de qual o momento dentro da agenda em que poderemos mapear a Asa Norte que é o interesse do Alex no momento?

No sábado estive com eles e mapeamos Taguatinda dentro de tempo que nos foi possível.
