Dear, New media and mobile technology are radically reshaping media, politics and society around the world. Yet the core principle of the open Internet is under attack, both from oppressive regimes abroad and reactionary elements at home. We'll be covering all this and more at the National Conference for Media Reform next month in Boston, in a series of discussions about how innovators and activists are using the open Internet, mobile phones and online communities for social change. Our presenters are some of the smartest thinkers and doers, on — or off — the Web. They include: Lawrence Lessig (Harvard), Susan Crawford (Cardozo Law School), Tim Wu (Columbia), Craig Newmark (craigslist), Jonathan Zittrain (Harvard), Reihan Salam (New America Foundation), Andy Carvin (NPR), Jillian York (Electronic Frontier Foundation), Ben Huh (Cheezburger Network) and Ramya Raghavan (YouTube). What's Next for Net Neutrality will ask how both recurring and emerging debates about protecting an open Internet are going to play out at the FCC, in Congress and in the courts in the coming years. Mobile Democracy: Your Phone Is Political will look at how the iPhone, Android phones and other smartphones are political devices – and why we should care about protecting these new tools for empowerment. Twitter, Facebook, mobile phones and online platforms like Ushahidi were central to global crises and democratic upheavals in Egypt, Libya and Haiti. Hacks and Hackers: Online Organizing and Disaster Response, will examine how digital tools aid political organizing and disaster recovery efforts.
