FEATURED DIALOGUE: Using Technology to Promote Transparency – NOW OPEN!
Join New Tactics, the Technology for Transparency Team, and other practitioners for an online dialogue on Using Technology to Promote Transparency from September 21 to 27, 2011.
There has been an expanding and increasingly global movement of technology and digital media projects aimed at promoting government transparency, accountability, and public participation in political processes. In Kenya, Mzalendo seeks to make information more accessible from the proceedings of the country’s parliament. In Jordan, Ishki aims to involve citizens in developing solutions to civic problems. Vota Inteligente in Chile promotes government transparency by informing Chilean citizens about corruption and policy debates through the use of social media. The Technology for Transparency Network, a project of Rising Voices, is documenting these transparency projects to gain a better understanding of their current impact, obstacles, and future potential.
Each day, we will be focusing on a different discussion thread in this dialogue:
- Wednesday, Sept 21 - How have you used technology to promote transparency?
- Thursday, Sept 22 - How does the use of technology to promote transparency differ across regions, cultures, and types of governance?
- Friday, Sept 23 - How do you engage civil society, media, government and others to increase impact?
- Saturday and Sunday - What are the risks, challenges and opportunities for practitioners using technology for transparency?
- Monday, Sept 26 - Sounds great, but how do you implement a project that uses technology to promote transparency?
- Tuesday, Sept 27 - What are the next steps? What is needed to make this work more effective?
This online dialogue is an opportunity to share these case studies and tools with the New Tactics online community, learn from the experiences of practitioners implementing these projects, and discuss new ideas, challenges, risks and opportunities. Join New Tactics and the International Fellowship of Reconciliation's Women Peacemakers Program (IFOR/WPP) for an online dialogue on the topic of Faith-based peacebuilding: The need for a gender perspective, from October 19 to October 25, 2011.
The role of religion in conflict and peacebuilding, the rise of religious fundamentalism, and the threat this poses for women's human rights are issues receiving increasing attention. IFOR/WPP and its partners have been exploring the link between gender, religion and (inter)faith-based peacebuilding, including the positive role religion can play in promoting peacebuilding, and human and women's rights.
What are some of the major obstacles in relation to gender equality posed by religion? How are women’s’ rights specifically affected in this regard? Which strategies are used by women activists to overcome those obstacles (best practices)? Which positive dimensions do religion and spirituality bring to women's lives? What specific obstacles and advances in terms of the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Resolutions can be found in faith-based peacebuilding contexts and initiatives?
This dialogue is an opportunity for those involved in faith-based and interfaith-based peacebuilding and gender work, as well as those interested in it, to discuss these questions and share experiences.

Technology for Transparency Resources: Report and online case studies
The Technology for Transparency Network is proud to announce the release of its final report, Global mapping of technology for transparency and accountability. The report is published by the Transparency and Accountability Initiative along with over a dozen other reports on the global transparency movement. This report (available online) contains the key findings from having reviewed more than 100 projects and having interviewed dozens of practitioners in Central and Eastern Europe, East Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and North Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, the former Soviet Union, and Sub-Saharan Africa who use new technologies as a means to increase transparency and accountability. This summary helps to ‘take the pulse‘ of the Technology for Transparency and Accountability movement and suggests both exciting possibilities for scaling impact as well as important caveats and challenges.
Also, be sure to explore the Technology for Transparency Network website! You will find 63 case studies from over 30 countries that describe how practitioners are using technology for transparency. It is a great resource for anyone looking for new ideas or new partners to collaborate with!
