Karen Diemer with the City of Arcata is in charge of the planning of the
trail proposed to go from Arcata to the Bracut Marsh. With a grant from
the Coastal Conservancy, consultants have been hired to create a plan for
the trail running in the railroad corridor. Karen ask Timber Heritage if
we would help out by taking a film crew on the speeder going down the
tracks in the corridor. Since there is a short deadline for the planning
to be done, they want a video for people to easily access. They will start
with the film crew flying over the corridor, and we will have video of the
speeder running along the bay as a result. After the flight, they will
board the speeder for the rail journey. In order to be able to do this
project, it was determined that some clearing of brush and blackberry
vines from the track would be needed. With a one day notice, we set out on
Saturday to see how mouch distance was really possible. The City Public
Works has cut the tracks in many places, so we could set on the tracks at
I Street near the marsh, and go to Bracut. We had to repair one section
where many ties have been stolen. The attached photo is putting some ties
under the rails and spiling them down so we could pass this section. A
dedicated crew worked all weekend to clear the line. We now have about 5
miles of clear running for the speeder on the east side of the bay. We are
committed to seeing both the trail and the tracks for the excursion train
completed for the community's benefit. Marcus Brown
